Position Overview

POSITION TITLE: COUNSELOR

STATUS: NON-EXEMPT, FULL/PART TIME

SUPERVISOR: PROGRAM ADMINISTRATOR

Qualifications
  1. Must possess certification as an Alcohol and Drug Counselor or hold a Bachelor's degree with a minimum of 1-year experience in the substance abuse sector.
  2. At least 1-year experience in delivering educational content related to addiction recovery.
  3. Valid Driver's License with a clean driving record.
  4. Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, including MSWord, Excel, and Access, with a willingness to learn new software as necessary.
  5. Must be at least 21 years of age.
  6. Exceptional organizational abilities with a keen eye for detail.
  7. Capacity to make sound decisions and operate with minimal oversight.
  8. Adept at managing multiple tasks efficiently, ensuring timely and professional completion.
  9. Demonstrates professional integrity and confidentiality regarding all beneficiary and staff information.
  10. Commitment to uphold and promote the mission and philosophy of The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center.
  11. Active Christian perspective.
  12. If in recovery, must have maintained 3 years of continuous sobriety.
  13. No signs of current chemical dependency.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, or twist intermittently or continuously.
  • Ability to handle and maneuver office equipment and files.
  • Clear communication skills for telephone interactions.
  • Ability to lift objects weighing up to 30 lbs.
  • Capability to perform repetitive motion tasks.
General Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Center Administrator, the Counselor will oversee program staff to deliver counseling services and educational support to beneficiaries. As an integral member of the Rehabilitation team, the Counselor fosters an environment conducive to effective performance and learning through positive engagement, teaching, and accessibility to both beneficiaries and staff. Continuous professional development and training are encouraged to enhance effectiveness in service delivery.

Essential Job Duties

A. Personnel and Staffing

  1. Recruit, train, and effectively utilize community volunteers.
  2. Participate in weekly program meetings to ensure clear communication and team cohesion.

B. Intake Operations

  1. Develop and manage intake operations in accordance with ARC standards.
  2. Ensure compliance with all documentation and data entry requirements as per ARCC guidelines.

C. Curriculum Development

  1. Ensure curriculum aligns with ARC standards.
  2. Establish appropriate teaching objectives and outlines.
  3. Recruit qualified instructors for all educational sessions.
  4. Facilitate individual counseling sessions (minimum bi-weekly) and group counseling (weekly).

D. Counseling Services

  1. Assist beneficiaries in addressing and overcoming social and emotional challenges through individual and group counseling.
  2. Maintain up-to-date beneficiary files with accurate documentation of counseling and educational activities.
  3. Create individualized Rehabilitation Plans for beneficiaries receiving counseling.
  4. Support beneficiaries in preparation for their 3 and 5-month evaluations.
  5. Conduct assigned Christian education classes.
  6. Lead various groups or classes as needed.
  7. Deliver educational content within the program's framework.
  8. Contribute to weekly Case Conferences with valuable insights.
  9. Compile and maintain counseling statistics for monthly program reports.
  10. Document and maintain appropriate Progress Notes in beneficiary files.
  11. Assess and address the spiritual needs of beneficiaries, referring to the Chaplain as necessary.
  12. Attend at least one chapel service each month.
  13. Provide backup support to fellow counselors as required.
  14. Assist other Program Department staff as needed.
  15. Monitor and manage overtime, ensuring prior approval from the Administrator or designated representative.

F. Additional Responsibilities

  1. Collaborate with the Administrator to develop a successful program.
  2. Ensure compliance with ARCC review standards within the program department.
  3. Travel to various events as required.
  4. Perform other duties as assigned by the ARC Administrator.
