Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Mailing Machines Operator II to join our team at the California State Controller's Office. As a key member of our Disbursements team, you will be responsible for operating complex mailing equipment, processing large volumes of outgoing mail, and ensuring timely and accurate delivery to the United States Postal Service and other mail carriers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate a variety of mailing equipment, including complex multi-function computerized inserting machines, to process mail efficiently and accurately.
  • Follow control sheet/spool memo specifications to ensure jobs are completed correctly and in accordance with postal regulations.
  • Clear jams from mailing equipment and detect material handling errors, performing maintenance and minor repairs as needed.
  • Perform daily tasks, including lifting and moving 50 lb. boxes without assistance and maneuvering full mail cages weighing approximately 1,000 lbs.
  • Operate the presort machine (sorter) for ZIP Code sorting and remove sorted envelopes from bins, ensuring accurate and timely delivery.
  • Review work orders and documentation for all jobs, processing mail in accordance with work order specifications, postal regulations, and established mailing schedules.
  • Set up, adjust, and operate bursting, metering, and pressure sealing equipment, heavy-duty folders, joggers, cutters, shrink-wrap, and tying machines.
  • Ensure the correct postage meter and postage charge codes are used to apply postage, maintaining proper order/sequence of material during processing.
  • Calibrate complex, multi-function computerized mail inserting machines, performing sophisticated adjustments to ensure proper warrant multi-stuffing and prevent warrant/DDA misfeeds.
Requirements
  • General knowledge of postal regulations related to postage, types of mail, and ZIP Code sorting techniques.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time and lift/move heavy boxes and mail cages.
  • Excellent attendance and dependability, with flexibility to respond to changing workload and mandatory overtime.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member with all members of the Disbursements team.
  • Positive attitude and effective communication skills.
