The Recovery Support Specialist plays a crucial role in delivering peer support services to individuals grappling with substance use disorders (SUD). This position is dedicated to assisting clients in their journey towards lasting recovery by facilitating access to treatment, resources, and community support networks. The specialist acts as a bridge, integrating fragmented treatment approaches into a comprehensive care model that emphasizes ongoing support, even in the face of setbacks.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as a vital link between the recovery community, addiction treatment providers, healthcare systems, and the patient’s personal network, ensuring seamless connections across various care systems.
- Engage with patients identified with SUD, providing essential support and guidance.
- Conduct pre-discharge meetings with patients to assess needs, review treatment history, and collaboratively set recovery goals with clinical staff.
- Collaborate with the treatment team to deliver evidence-based interventions tailored to the needs of patients with SUD.
- Assist patients in navigating healthcare and social services, providing accompaniment to appointments and meetings as necessary.
- Offer transportation to clients for attending recovery meetings and essential appointments.
- Educate patients about addiction, employing motivational techniques to encourage engagement in treatment.
- Provide peer counseling, helping patients establish and pursue their treatment objectives while maintaining recovery.
- Identify and address barriers to recovery, serving as a role model and advocate for patients.
- Conduct outreach initiatives to promote participation in recovery-oriented and self-help groups.
- Facilitate access to treatment for SUD and co-occurring disorders, establishing efficient systems to identify treatment needs and appropriate care levels.
- Support data collection efforts for quality assurance and program evaluation.
- Collaborate with patients and care teams to develop effective relapse prevention and intervention strategies.
- Monitor patient progress and outcomes using a patient tracking system.
- Ensure clear communication among patients, primary care providers, consulting psychiatrists, and external service providers while maintaining confidentiality.
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive records for all patients, regularly reviewing caseloads with supervisors to focus on new and challenging cases.
Qualifications:
- Current certification as a Recovery Coach or Peer Specialist.
- A minimum of three years in sustained recovery.
- Reliable transportation and comprehensive insurance coverage.
- Strong interpersonal, facilitation, and leadership abilities.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Proficient advocacy skills and knowledge of community resources and recovery services.
- Open to various recovery pathways and committed to a patient-centered approach.
- Comfortable working in both medical and social service environments.
- Clinical expertise in motivational enhancement strategies.
- Ability to provide constructive feedback in a non-judgmental manner.
- Flexibility to adapt to changing needs and circumstances.

- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
