About the Advance Analytics Office (AAO) and Big Data Platform (BDP):

The AAO is dedicated to accelerating analytics solutions across the enterprise, swiftly unlocking business value. Our initiatives focus on critical business metrics, including reducing manufacturing costs, enhancing capital efficiency, shortening product development timelines, and improving operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.

Our solutions leverage cutting-edge Industry 4.0 technologies and are delivered through a platform approach to facilitate rapid scaling. We explore AI/ML for enhancing manufacturing yield, quality, and equipment uptime, alongside Operations Research for optimizing capacity and scheduling, Digital Twin for inventory and logistics, and Product Telematics for effective fleet management. Many of these solutions are pioneering, featuring discovery and rapid learning components aimed at scalability.

The BDP team provides self-service data and rapid scaling application platforms that enable impactful factory solutions. You will collaborate with numerous factories globally, as well as product development teams and support operations across Finance, Supply Chain, Procurement, and Sales.

Position Overview

Key Responsibilities:

As a Platform Engineer, you will architect, design, manage, and support Kubernetes-based solutions, both on-premises and in the cloud. Your role will involve maintaining the overall health of the Big Data Edge platform, which includes troubleshooting storage, network, and compute issues. You will also be instrumental in establishing a robust DevOps platform, implementing and supporting our global hybrid cloud container strategies utilizing Kubernetes on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and Amazon Web Services (AWS).

The ideal candidate will possess expertise in modern application frameworks, such as 12-factor application development, and demonstrate proficiency in infrastructure as code practices. Experience in establishing continuous integration pipelines using tools like Bitbucket, Jenkins, Terraform, and Ansible is preferred. A strong capability in building continuous deployment processes using Docker, Artifactory, Spinnaker, and Argo CD is essential, alongside a commitment to DevOps principles.

This role requires collaboration with various Western Digital manufacturing, engineering, and IT teams to understand factory-critical workloads and design effective solutions. The BDP team empowers the engineering and data science community with self-service data and application platforms to facilitate machine learning (ML) capabilities. The ideal candidate should be enthusiastic about working with cloud-native technologies to meet various Service Level Agreements (SLA). A willingness to experiment with new technologies and a natural aptitude for troubleshooting are essential. Clear and professional communication with internal customers, external vendors, and colleagues is expected.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Information Systems, or relevant experience in the IT field.
  • 8+ years of experience managing enterprise-level production applications and infrastructure encompassing storage, memory, network, compute, and virtualization.
  • A minimum of 4+ years of experience architecting, designing, managing, and supporting Kubernetes solutions in manufacturing environments.
  • Proficiency in Python and Unix shell scripting, with a strong commitment to DevOps principles in setting up continuous integration and deployment pipelines.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills to identify root causes of incidents related to compute, network, and storage resource bottlenecks, along with proactive identification of corrective actions.
  • Experience with monitoring and observability tools such as Splunk, Prometheus, and Grafana.
  • Experience managing on-call alerts and responding to incidents.
  • A desire to learn new relevant technologies to support innovative solutions.

Preferred:

  • Certification in Terraform or any other infrastructure automation tool.
  • Experience with Kubernetes in GCP Anthos and/or AWS EKS.
  • Experience with automation scripts using Ansible, Terraform, or Cloud Formation.
  • Familiarity with data services such as Elasticsearch, Redis, NiFi, MongoDB, MySQL, and PostgreSQL.
