Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Polysomnography Technician to join our team at the West Virginia University Health System. As a Polysomnography Technician, you will play a critical role in conducting sleep studies and providing technical support to our physicians.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct sleep studies using specialized equipment and software
  • Prepare patients for and conduct sleep studies, including routine and specialized procedures
  • Meet competency standards within 3 months of hire date, including adult and pediatric patients
  • Provide technical data to physicians for diagnosis and treatment
  • Assist in the technical training of house-staff and technician trainees
  • Coordinate and prioritize scheduling of procedures, ensuring proper document flow and storage
  • Document procedures performed in patient charts, ensuring accuracy and timeliness
  • File and complete necessary departmental documentation, providing historical data
  • Submit accurate and timely patient charges
  • Obtain necessary information from clinical records, requisitions, or patient questioning to enable quality studies
  • Perform sleep studies in accordance with policy and procedure guidelines, at the bedside and in critical care areas
  • Assure accurate recording of electrical impulses of the neurological system
  • Prepare initial data for use by physicians in formulating sleep reports
  • Inform patients and families regarding the nature and significance of procedures
  • Accurately observe, record, and report patient concerns, symptoms, and reactions
  • Maintain orderliness and cleanliness of equipment, procedure rooms, and work areas
  • Assist in maintaining a daily stock of clean linen and necessary supplies
  • Clean and prepare necessary items for proper sterilization techniques
  • Participate in educational inservices and workshops on topics related to the Sleep Evaluation Center
  • Review educational materials on a self-paced basis and meet academic performance standards
  • Communicate with co-workers and staff to answer questions and provide information
  • Maintain Continuing Education (CEU) requirements
  • Assist physicians with related research activities
  • Perform studies or assist with research activities, maintaining proper documentation
  • Assist in providing inservices regarding sleep procedures and equipment operation
  • Assist in the instruction and hands-on technical training of trainees, house-staff, and medical staff
  • Provide information to other healthcare workers and the general public
Requirements
  • Ability to lift, push, or pull minimum of 40 pounds
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods
  • Flexibility to work during unscheduled hours
