Overview of the Role:
The Clinical Pharmacy Specialist is dedicated to delivering comprehensive pharmaceutical care to patients in the Emergency Department through integrated medication distribution, clinical services, research, and education. This role is pivotal in the ongoing development, maintenance, and implementation of both current and future clinical pharmacy initiatives and services.

Responsibilities include providing clinical pharmacy services, supporting the development programs for associates, and offering training and instruction to pharmacy residents and on-site pharmacy students.


Key Responsibilities:
1. Execute clinical pharmacokinetic dosing services promptly and accurately.
2. Offer drug information services to healthcare professionals.
3. Collaborate regularly with medical services to enhance the quality of pharmacy services provided to patients.
4. Conduct audits and ensure the quality of clinical programs and pharmacy residents.
5. Assist in the training, supervision, and evaluation of pharmacy students during their clerkships.
6. Identify, monitor, document, and report any adverse drug reactions and medication errors.
7. Engage in drug therapy management during medical emergencies (e.g., code situations, trauma, stroke).
8. Reconcile medication records between pharmacy and nursing as needed.
9. Optimize pharmacotherapy regimens based on current evidence-based guidelines.
10. Document clinical consultations, interventions, and cost-saving measures for the pharmacy within the Emergency Department.
11. Monitor the utilization of high-cost medications to ensure compliance with established criteria (e.g., alteplase, snake antivenom, Factor VII).
12. Provide educational support to nursing and medical staff.

Dispense medications to both inpatients and outpatients in accordance with prescriptions, while offering guidance on medication usage to support the healing process.

Advise physicians on formulary products, alternative options, and recommend more effective medications for patient treatment.
Supervise and oversee the daily activities of pharmacy technicians and interns.
Deliver accurate, efficient, and courteous service to nursing units while supporting the decentralized pharmacy team.

Fulfill the responsibilities outlined in the decentralized job descriptions and assist all associates to ensure comprehensive, timely, and precise pharmacy services.

Ensure that compounded medications adhere to the prescribed strength, quality, and purity standards. Compounded products must be packaged, labeled, and dispensed in accordance with current regulations.
Collaborate effectively with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare staff to facilitate seamless transitions of care.

Qualifications:
General Requirements: * A valid State of Michigan Pharmacy license in good standing is required. * A valid State of Michigan Controlled Substance license in good standing is required.

* Completion of a Pharmacy Practice Residency; OR BCPS (Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist); OR a minimum of 2 years of experience as an ED pharmacist in a level 1 trauma center.

Work Experience: * Experience in ED pharmacy is preferred. * A minimum of five years of experience as a hospital pharmacist is preferred.

Education: * Graduate of an accredited College of Pharmacy.

Bachelor's Degree in Pharmacy.

Specialized Knowledge and Skills: * Effective oral, written, and phone communication skills are essential. * Proficiency in keyboard usage as required to perform essential job duties.
