About the Role

The Community Garden Intern will play a vital role in supporting the growth and development of the SPY Community Garden. This 6-month internship will provide participants with hands-on experience in gardening, urban farming, and landscaping, as well as opportunities for professional development and networking.

During the first 3 months, interns will work closely with the SPY Garden Team to develop and maintain the garden, including planting, watering, weeding, composting, harvesting, and distributing produce. They will also participate in activities and discussions around garden-related topics, garden walks, and workshops.

In the second 3 months, interns will have the opportunity to work with a partner business in industries such as food service, landscaping, or nurseries, applying their skills and knowledge in a real-world setting. Throughout the program, interns will receive one-on-one support sessions with the Intern Liaison and participate in group-based professional development classes.

Responsibilities
  • Support the SPY Garden Team in growing and maintaining the garden
  • Participate in activities and discussions around garden-related topics
  • Help plan and co-facilitate garden-related workshops for youth and community members
  • Support management in tracking plant and volunteer data
  • Attend SPY Garden team meetings
Requirements

Background
  • Candidates must be a youth member currently receiving services from Safe Place for Youth (SPY)
  • Must be between 16-24 years of age
  • Must be engaged in either Education & Employment or Case Management at SPY
  • Has interest in exploring gardening/urban farming in a professional capacity
  • Has a reliable method of communication
  • Willing to complete a live scan (background check)
  • Is punctual and organized
  • Able to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds
