Job Summary

The State of Wisconsin is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Director of Public History and Engagement to join our team. As a key member of our Collections leadership team, you will play a critical role in establishing the importance of public history in making our sites and attractions places of inspiration and exploration for local, regional, and national visitors of all ages.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement public history programs and exhibitions that engage communities and scholars to develop historically-sound and audience-centered experiences for the public.
  • Collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams to create dynamic public offerings that bring voice to people's experiences of this place.
  • Lead and mentor teams to achieve strategic planning and implement annual objectives that serve the Society's mission and national and international reputation.
  • Work closely with the Collections Division Administrator to develop and implement institutional change and guide the organization towards a more inclusive and equitable future.
Requirements
  • Experience working with history as a subject matter, including a firm understanding of Wisconsin or upper Midwest history within broader Midwest and national contexts.
  • Experience engaging communities and scholars to develop historically-sound and audience-centered experiences for the public.
  • Experience as a collaborator in making public programs and exhibitions in the cultural heritage sector.
  • Experience guiding institutional change, leading and mentoring teams, and speaking publicly on topics of history.
