A Clinical Laboratory Technician plays a vital role in the healthcare system by conducting tests and analyses on blood and other bodily fluids to assist healthcare providers in diagnosing and treating patients. These technicians are responsible for the operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment, ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of both automated and manual testing procedures.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct and analyze specimens, including proficiency testing and manual procedures, ensuring compliance with established protocols.
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment of moderate complexity.
- Utilize information systems effectively; gather and interpret relevant data.
- Perform and assess quality control measures.
- Adhere to all laboratory and hospital policies, as well as state and federal regulations, including infection control and safety protocols.
- Engage in quality assurance initiatives and collaborate with colleagues to maintain workflow efficiency.
- Manage inventory effectively and utilize resources judiciously.
- Enhance professional knowledge through continuous education and training.
- Adapt to additional responsibilities as required.
Qualifications:
- Education: An Associate's degree is required, along with registration as a Medical Technician by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or an equivalent certification.
- Licensure: Must meet the New York State Department of Health requirements and hold a current Clinical Lab Technician license.
- Experience: Previous laboratory experience is preferred.
Preferred Skills:
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Effective written and verbal communication abilities.
- Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time efficiently, and adapt to changing workloads.
Physical Requirements:
- May involve light lifting and carrying of equipment and supplies, with the potential to lift up to 30 pounds.
- Repetitive hand movements (e.g., keyboard usage), as well as prolonged periods of sitting, standing, or walking, may be necessary.
