Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Public Safety Communications Dispatcher to join our team at the City and County of San Francisco. As a key member of our emergency response team, you will be responsible for receiving and processing emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatching police, fire, and emergency medical services, and providing critical information to first responders.

Key Responsibilities
  • Receive and process emergency and non-emergency calls, gathering and evaluating information from callers to determine the appropriate response.
  • Dispatch police, fire, and emergency medical services to specific locations using a computer-aided dispatch system and two-way radio dispatch console.
  • Evaluate incoming reports of police, fire, and medical emergencies, transmitting complete and accurate information to appropriate field personnel.
  • Monitor and coordinate the status of incidents and records of dispatched emergency service personnel and apparatus.
  • Receive and disseminate information from other law enforcement and emergency service computer networks related to jurisdictional requests for police, fire, or medical service assistance.
  • Maintain familiarity with area geography, including major streets and buildings, and recognize circumstances that may pose hazards to public safety field units and the public.
  • Maintain up-to-date understanding of public safety policies and procedures for the Department of Emergency Management, police, fire, EMS, and other emergency service providers.
  • Respond to routine and non-routine inquiries regarding police, fire, or emergency medical services, properly classifying and prioritizing any report or complaint and determining the appropriate course of action.
Requirements
  • Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent (GED or High School Proficiency Examination).
  • Two years of experience in a public contact position providing information and/or a service, or in a position where the primary responsibility is interacting with people.
Working Conditions

Dispatchers work in a fast-paced, highly stressful, and confined environment.

Selection Process

The selection process for this position will include a supplemental questionnaire, performance examination, and background investigation. Candidates who pass the exam will be prompted to submit a Personal History Statement and supplemental documents prior to the initiation of the background investigation.
