Role Overview:
The primary technical responsibility of this position encompasses various facets of ensuring a high level of safety that complements Rivian's exceptional design. Our R1S and R1T models have achieved the prestigious Top Safety Pick + rating from the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety).
In this role, you will collaborate with leaders across the organization to foster effective teamwork and alignment with strategic objectives. You will oversee your team's performance and guide engineering efforts to meet safety standards.
Your mission will be to empower and facilitate your team members, establishing an efficient workflow that aligns with vehicle program goals and timelines. You will enhance the organization's agility and creativity in addressing challenges while ensuring timely delivery.
Key Responsibilities:
- Foster a cohesive and focused team through strong communication and leadership.
- Ensure timely delivery of engineering outputs while managing a team dedicated to achieving safety performance in vehicle programs.
- Collaborate with attribute leaders and Vehicle Concept teams to provide safety-related guidance.
- Lead the definition and development of crash performance, considering all affected subsystems and components through a comprehensive systems approach.
- Continuously improve team processes to adapt to evolving business needs efficiently.
- Develop and oversee virtual, component, and vehicle testing plans to meet Rivian's safety objectives, tracking progress toward attribute sign-off.
- Guide the team in vehicle design, interpretation of CAE and test results, and development of countermeasures.
- Facilitate discussions within Safety and external forums to address identified gaps.
- Collaborate with program management, systems engineering, manufacturing, design, and other development teams.
- Mentor team members and new engineers.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- Over 10 years of experience in automotive Safety Engineering.
- More than 7 years of experience managing engineering teams and delivering high-volume production, including at least one vehicle developed for production.
- Strong expertise in Crash Structures for various crash modes and familiarity with global VRUP (Vulnerable Road User Program).
- Ability to communicate effectively with senior management, providing clear and concise information.
- Working knowledge of regulatory, certification, and rating requirements.
- Hands-on problem-solving approach based on first principles.
- Capacity to thrive in a dynamic environment and lead a team through transitions positively.
- Comprehensive understanding of regulatory requirements and consumer ratings for North America, Europe, and China.
- Proven track record in delivering programs related to crash structures and/or VRUP.
Compensation and Benefits:
Salary range for California-based applicants: $218,200-$272,800 (actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location, and other factors permitted by law).
