Position Overview:
The Certified Respiratory Care Specialist will conduct and assess diagnostic and therapeutic clinical procedures as per physician directives. Responsibilities include performing essential procedures such as endotracheal intubation, extubations, tracheotomy tube modifications, and capnography monitoring. Additional tasks involve evaluating the validity of medical orders, transporting patients needing mechanical ventilation or airway management, ensuring the safe operation of devices in MRI settings, and assisting during Bronchoscopy procedures. The Specialist will also oversee the orientation and training of Certified Respiratory Therapists. Proficiency in mechanical ventilator modalities, Non-Invasive Positive Pressure Ventilation (NPPV), Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), and Bi-Level Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP) is required. The Specialist must be prepared to return to work during emergencies, including adverse weather conditions, mass casualty events, or internal disasters. Other responsibilities will be assigned as necessary.

Educational Requirements:
  • Associate's Degree (AS) in Respiratory Therapy is mandatory.
  • Bachelor's Degree (BS) in Respiratory Therapy is preferred.
Experience Requirements:
  • A minimum of 6 months of clinical experience post-graduation from a respiratory care program is required.
  • Two years of post-graduate respiratory care experience is preferred.
Licensure/Certification:
  • Current Respiratory Care Practitioner License in the state of South Carolina is required.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) certification from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) is required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is required (or to be completed within 6 months of employment).
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification is required (or to be completed within 6 months of employment).

  • Excellent verbal communication skills are necessary.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment in emergency scenarios is required.
Work Environment:

  • Comfortable physical surroundings.
  • Prolonged periods of standing and walking.
Physical Demands:
This role requires medium to heavy physical exertion. The employee will frequently need to stand, sit, and walk; occasionally use hands and fingers; and frequently communicate verbally. The employee must be able to exert 30 to 45 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 15 to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 15 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Specific vision capabilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The ability to hear is necessary to process instructions and respond to safety codes and alarms. The physical demands outlined here represent those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
