Position Overview:

The Licensed Respiratory Care Specialist will execute and assess diagnostic and therapeutic clinical interventions as per physician directives. Responsibilities encompass a range of procedures including, but not limited to, endotracheal intubation, extubations, tracheotomy tube modifications, and capnography surveillance. Additional tasks involve evaluating the validity of medical orders, transporting patients requiring mechanical ventilation or airway management, ensuring the safe operation of devices in MRI settings, and providing assistance during Bronchoscopy procedures. The specialist will also be accountable for the orientation and training of Certified Respiratory Therapists. Proficiency in mechanical ventilator modalities, Non-Invasive Positive Pressure Ventilation (NPPV), Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), and Bi-Level Positive Airway Pressure (BiPAP) is essential.

Educational Requirements:
  • Associate's Degree (AS) in Respiratory Therapy is mandatory.
  • Bachelor's Degree (BS) in Respiratory Therapy is preferred.
Professional Experience:
  • A minimum of 6 months of clinical experience post-graduation from a respiratory care program is required.
  • Two years of post-graduate respiratory care experience is preferred.
Licensure/Certification:
  • Current licensure as a Respiratory Care Practitioner in the state of South Carolina is required.
  • Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) certification from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) is required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification must be obtained within six months of employment.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification must be obtained within six months of employment.
Essential Skills:
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with nursing staff, physicians, and department leaders is essential.
  • Exceptional core customer service skills are strongly required.
  • Strong organizational abilities are necessary.
  • Proficient computer skills are required.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills are necessary.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment in emergency situations is required.
Work Environment:
  • Occasional exposure to challenging patients.
  • Potential exposure to bloodborne and airborne pathogens.
  • High stress levels due to simultaneous multiple demands.
  • Frequent exposure to biohazardous materials.
  • Physical surroundings are generally pleasant and comfortable.
