Providence, Rhode Island, United States CharterCARE Health Partners Full time

Position Overview: The role of the Healthcare Financial Counselor is initiated through a comprehensive financial assessment of patients, which encompasses an evaluation of hospital fees, the patient's insurance coverage, and their financial capabilities. For patients with insurance, the counselor will confirm coverage details, compute co-payments and deductibles, and ensure the collection of these fees at the time of service. In instances where insurance and personal finances fall short, the counselor will identify further assistance programs the patient may qualify for, including Medicare, Medicaid, and various state initiatives. Furthermore, the counselor may ascertain eligibility for reduced fees or complimentary services under federal or state medical assistance schemes. Should the patient qualify for lower charges, the Healthcare Financial Counselor will facilitate the collection of any relevant fees from the patient.

Key Responsibilities: It is essential to approach this role with empathy, compassion, and reassurance while elucidating the patient's financial responsibilities and available resources for payment assistance. Simultaneously, it is crucial to advocate for the hospital's interests by clearly and firmly articulating the financial obligations the patient must meet. The counselor will also act as a conduit between various hospital departments and insurance providers, necessitating the establishment of strong collaborative relationships with colleagues and external partners.

Qualifications: A minimum of a high school diploma is required, along with at least three years of relevant experience. Preferred qualifications include business school education or professional experience in a medical office setting. Training or experience in insurance processes, patient registration, medical billing, financial counseling, and bilingual capabilities are advantageous. A thorough understanding of HIPAA and EMTALA regulations is vital for this position. Proficiency in medical terminology, computer literacy, and exceptional communication skills are essential, alongside a solid understanding of third-party billing practices. The ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment is crucial. Strong interpersonal skills and the capacity to maintain composure while interacting with patients and their families, considering cultural and linguistic diversity, are imperative. Demonstrated customer service excellence and the ability to work effectively within interdisciplinary teams are required. Candidates must exhibit compassion, understanding, and professionalism in both appearance and conduct.
