Under the supervision of the Aquatic Director and/or Head Lifeguard, the Aquatic Safety Officer is tasked with ensuring a secure environment for all individuals in and around the swimming area. This role includes responding to emergencies and effectively administering CPR/AED, First Aid, and Oxygen in accordance with certifications. Aquatic Safety Officers must remain vigilant and easily identifiable at all times while maintaining a professional appearance. They are expected to operate at peak efficiency in all aspects of the aquatic department as assigned and demonstrate behaviors and attitudes that align with the YMCA Mission and policies of the Association.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Implement preventative lifeguarding by adhering to and enforcing pool regulations and policies promptly, while conducting routine inspections of the pool and deck area throughout their shift.
  • Verify the condition of required safety equipment at the beginning of each shift and report any issues to the Aquatic Director or designated personnel immediately.
  • Ensure the security of the pool area at all times, which includes locking and unlocking doors and gates to manage access to aquatic facilities.
  • Maintain cleanliness and chemical balance of the pool, documenting findings on appropriate forms, and report any concerns to the Aquatic Director or designated personnel promptly.
  • Provide uninterrupted supervision of the pool while on duty, demonstrating vigilant scanning of the area every 10 seconds, checking the bottom, middle, and top of their designated zone.
  • Understand and execute rescue and emergency procedures, document incidents on the proper forms, and communicate with the Aquatic Director or designated personnel as outlined in the Emergency Action Plan (EAP) in a timely manner, adhering to aquatic and facility policies and certification requirements.
  • Clean and store equipment appropriately, ensuring the pool deck and surrounding areas are tidy and free of clutter and debris.
  • Perform additional duties or take on extra responsibilities as needed or as requested by the Program Director or supervisor.
  • Engage in positive public relations with participants, members, and guests to ensure a welcoming experience.
  • Carry out any other tasks as assigned by the Aquatic Director and/or Head Lifeguard.
  • Comply with the Association's operating policies and procedures by conducting programs within the established guidelines.
  • Adhere to YMCA policies and procedures regarding the safety, health, and welfare of members, program participants, guests, and staff; respond to emergency situations according to facility policies and certification requirements.
  • Attend and actively participate in all training sessions, staff meetings, and lifeguard drills as assigned.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

Education/Experience Required:
  • Must be at least 15 years of age.
  • If 15 years old, must work alongside an 18+ year old lifeguard unless an Aquatic Director and/or Full-Time Pool Manager is present during the entire shift.
  • Proficient in swimming as determined by passing a swim test.
  • Ability to foster positive, authentic relationships with individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds.
  • Represent the YMCA positively.
Certifications/Trainings Required:
  • Must possess and maintain current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification, including Oxygen. (If holding YMCA Lifeguard certification, must transition to ARC within 60 days of employment).
  • Must possess and maintain current CPR/AED (in compliance with Lifeguard certification), First Aid, and Oxygen certifications.
  • May be required to obtain additional certifications as mandated by the Aquatics Director or designated personnel.
