Field Support Engineer for FACTS & HVDC Systems

Key Responsibilities


The Field Support Engineer will be an integral part of the Hitachi Energy Grid Integration FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission Systems) Service Solutions team, delivering expert service and support to clients operating FACTS & HVDC stations.

This role encompasses various applications, including Series Capacitors (SC), Static VAR Compensators (SVC), STATCOMS, and High Voltage DC (HVDC) systems.

The primary focus of the Field Support Engineer will be on emergency assistance, troubleshooting, and maintenance, while also participating in the installation, commissioning, and upgrades of stations.

Hitachi Energy's installations cater to both utility and industrial sectors.

Upon joining, the selected candidate will undergo comprehensive training through hands-on involvement in commissioning projects and field service tasks alongside seasoned members of the Service Solutions team.

As the candidate develops the necessary skills and experience, they will be expected to independently manage assigned responsibilities.

The successful candidate should be prepared for travel up to 80% of the time to various sites across North America and internationally for commissioning and related activities.

Specific Duties


The Field Support Engineer will act as the primary contact and subject matter expert for the maintenance and repair of FACTS & HVDC systems.

Customer support will be provided through phone communication and on-site visits.

The Field Support Engineer will take ownership of customer inquiries and collaborate with project managers to ensure timely resolution of issues.

This role will also involve providing technical guidance and mentorship to less experienced team members, including leading training sessions for customers on Hitachi Energy control systems and station operations.

Understanding and adhering to health and safety protocols is essential, ensuring the safety of all personnel during work activities involving Hitachi Energy systems.

The Field Support Engineer will also play a role in supporting sales initiatives during customer visits, promoting HITACHI ENERGY and identifying potential business opportunities.

Qualifications

  • Proficient in English
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (preferably in Power Systems) or equivalent field experience;
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in substations and industrial electrification projects;
  • Strong understanding of electrical safety protocols and compliance standards;
  • Comprehensive hands-on knowledge of substation equipment and engineering practices;
  • Experience with computer-based control systems;
  • Ability to perform effectively in high-pressure, time-sensitive situations;
  • Familiarity with Power Electronics, SVC, SC, or HVDC technologies is advantageous;
  • Knowledge of electrical standards (ANSI, CSA, IEC, etc.);
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and initiative skills;
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking abilities;
  • Capability to lead and direct subcontractor and customer resources when necessary;
  • Must be organized, flexible, and able to work autonomously;
  • Proficient in necessary computer tools for task completion;
  • Willingness to travel extensively within North America and internationally.
