Senior Surety Underwriter

The Senior Surety Underwriter plays a crucial role in driving profitable underwriting outcomes aligned with the organization's growth and profitability goals. This position involves effective risk assessment, maintaining strong agency relationships, managing the underwriting portfolio, and fostering professional development within the team. The Underwriter will oversee the underwriting and servicing of both new and renewal accounts for designated agents and producers, ensuring adherence to the company's underwriting policies, authority limits, and pricing standards. A deep understanding of the organization's mission, vision, and values is essential, as is the commitment to uphold these standards.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and maintain a profitable portfolio through thorough risk evaluation, appropriate pricing, and dedicated service.
  • Ensure compliance with state regulations and adhere to corporate underwriting and pricing protocols.
  • Operate within the established authority limits and refer cases to Home Office Underwriting as necessary.
  • Work collaboratively with the territory team, keeping peers and management updated on all relevant issues and activities.
  • Contribute to the development and execution of the territory business strategy in partnership with the Manager.
  • Provide training to territory staff and clients regarding underwriting guidelines and expectations.
  • Serve as the primary referral point for the territory underwriting team within the Home Office authority.
  • Build and maintain relationships with external clients by traveling within the territory to engage with agents, producers, and nonprofit organizations.
  • Participate in industry events as needed, including agency or association conventions.
  • Deliver professional, timely, and courteous communication and service to external clients and internal teams.
  • Collaborate with the territory team on reporting and database updates as required.
  • Gather competitive intelligence and stay informed about market trends and demands.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 3 years of underwriting experience in insurance products, particularly in contract surety insurance, with a focus on risk assessment and pricing strategies.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience.
  • Strong analytical skills to interpret data, make informed risk decisions, and contribute to both tactical and strategic planning.
  • Experience in training, coaching, and mentoring team members in the area of expertise.
  • High regard for confidentiality, along with excellent organizational and time management abilities.
  • Willingness to travel up to 25% of the time within the assigned territory and to the Home Office as required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Possession of CPCU or CIC designation.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development.
