Job Description

Orange & Rockland is seeking a highly skilled Substation Engineer to join our team in the Substation Engineering discipline. As a key member of our engineering team, you will be responsible for designing and applying utility-grade substation systems to transmission and substation systems for the company.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and layout of substation systems, including breakers, switches, and substation steel.
  • Review and analyze substation projects to determine best practices and designs.
  • Perform ampacity calculations, substation grounding, battery sizing, lightning protection, and insulation coordination.
  • Provide engineering support to various operations groups throughout the company.
  • Attend departmental meetings and serve on committees as required.
  • Ensure that the department is kept up-to-date on the progress of projects, including the update of the budget.
  • Stay informed of industry developments and maintain familiarity with IEEE, ANSI, NESC standards, and NERC/FERC regulatory standards.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) is required, with 3-5 years of total work experience in substation engineering work or related operations experience.
  • Experience and/or knowledge of substation layout and major equipment, including breakers, switches, and substation steel.
  • Ability to interpret layout, one-line, and schematic drawings.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong analytical, technical, and computer skills.
  • Ability to apply good individual judgment, initiative, creativity, and decision-making in the handling of assignments.
  • Proficient with IEEE/ANSI Standards and National Electrical Safety Code.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, with relevant work experience.
  • Minimum 1 year of experience in substation design.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) certification, or ability to obtain a NY, NJ, and PA Professional Engineers License, or be in the process of qualifying for a license.
Additional Requirements
  • Must be able to respond to company emergencies by performing a System Emergency Assignment to restore service to our customers.
  • Able and willing to travel within company service territory, as needed.
