California, United States Astranis Full time

Astranis is dedicated to closing the digital gap by connecting the billions of individuals globally who currently lack internet access. Our approach involves developing the next generation of compact, cost-efficient spacecraft to facilitate global connectivity.

As a collective, we have successfully launched two satellites into orbit, secured ten commercial agreements exceeding $1 billion in revenue, raised over $500 million from leading global investors, and assembled a team of over 300 exceptional engineers. Our operations are based in a historic San Francisco office, previously utilized for shipbuilding during the World Wars.

Our satellites, which function from geostationary orbit (GEO), weigh merely 400 kg and employ a proprietary software-defined radio payload. Each satellite has the capacity to connect over two million individuals, and we are eager about the positive impact we will soon have in regions such as the Philippines, Peru, and Mexico.

Supported by significant funding and a committed, collaborative team, we provide a fulfilling work environment where you will learn and contribute meaningfully, regardless of your career stage.

Role Overview

As a Production Quality Engineer, you will face the unique challenge of establishing a quality management system and developing robust processes for its implementation. As Astranis increases satellite production, we need to create new business processes, systems, and controls to guarantee that our hardware meets the highest standards of quality and reliability. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in quality engineering for high-reliability products, be self-motivated and independent, and have a proven history of resolving complex issues in a dynamic setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support and execute quality functions including nonconformance resolution, first article inspection, root cause analysis, corrective actions, containments, and statistical process control.
  • Draft and maintain quality management system (QMS) documentation to regulate our design, manufacturing, and testing procedures.
  • Collaborate with design engineering teams to establish standards for part drawings, focusing on key characteristics, dimensioning, GD&T, and first article inspection plans.
  • Develop a process validation framework for qualifying new manufacturing processes and collaborate with production engineering teams for implementation.
  • Create metrics and tools to assess the success of products and processes in production, including product yield and statistical process control (SPC).
  • Establish a system for tracking calibrated metrology within the factory.
  • Conduct regular build quality reviews to ensure design intent is achieved and effectively communicated.
  • Define electrostatic discharge (ESD) and cleanliness requirements and control processes within the factory.
  • Assist production and engineering leadership in identifying opportunities for risk reduction and simplifying designs and processes to enhance manufacturability.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Minimum of 2 years in a manufacturing or quality engineering role.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with QMS standards such as AS9100 and ISO9001.
  • Hands-on experience in qualifying and maintaining manufacturing processes for electronics and/or mechanical assemblies.
  • Experience in reviewing design documentation and implementing first-article inspection plans.
  • Strong skills in SQL and Python, with the ability to manage large datasets and create useful tools, dashboards, and reports.
  • Demonstrated application of process validation and control methods such as PFMEA, design of experiments (DOE), and statistical process control (SPC).
  • Proficiency in using common CAD, PLM, and ERP systems such as Solidworks, Altium, and Arena.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to produce executive-level reports and presentations to convey information about large datasets effectively.

Compensation and Benefits

All positions offer a compensation package that includes equity and comprehensive benefits. Base pay is one component of Astranis's total rewards package, which may also include equity in the form of incentive stock options, high-quality company-subsidized healthcare, disability and life insurance benefits, flexible PTO, 401(K) retirement plans, and complimentary on-site catered meals.

Base Salary Range

$110,000 - $130,000 USD

Eligibility Requirements

To comply with U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicants must be U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents of the United States, or other protected individuals as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3).
