California, United States Astranis Full time

Astranis is dedicated to addressing the global digital divide by connecting the billions of individuals worldwide who currently lack internet access. We are achieving this by developing the next generation of compact, cost-efficient spacecraft to bring connectivity to the world.

Our team has successfully launched two satellites into orbit, secured ten commercial agreements valued at over $1 billion, raised more than $500 million from leading global investors, and assembled a team of over 300 exceptional engineers. We operate from our renowned San Francisco office, a historic site that once contributed to shipbuilding during the World Wars.

Our satellites, which function from geostationary orbit (GEO), weigh merely 400 kg and utilize an innovative software-defined radio payload. Each satellite has the capacity to connect over two million individuals, and we are eager to see the positive impact we will soon have in regions such as the Philippines, Peru, and Mexico.

With substantial backing and a committed, collaborative team, we provide a fulfilling work environment where you will learn and make a significant contribution, regardless of your career stage.

Role Overview: Production Quality Engineer

As a Production Quality Engineer, you will face the distinctive challenge of establishing a quality management system and developing robust processes for its implementation. As Astranis expands its satellite production, it is essential to create new business processes, systems, and controls to guarantee that our hardware meets the highest standards of quality and reliability. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in quality engineering for high-reliability products, demonstrate self-motivation and autonomy, and have a proven history of resolving complex issues in a dynamic setting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support and execute quality functions such as nonconformance resolution, first article inspection, root cause analysis, corrective actions, and statistical process control.
  • Draft and maintain quality management system (QMS) documentation to regulate how we design, manufacture, and test hardware.
  • Collaborate with design engineering teams to establish standards for part drawings, including key characteristics identification, dimensioning, GD&T, and first article inspection plans.
  • Develop a process validation framework for qualifying new manufacturing processes and collaborate with production engineering teams for implementation.
  • Create metrics and tools to evaluate the success of products and processes in production, including product yield and statistical process control (SPC).
  • Establish a system for tracking calibrated metrology within the factory.
  • Conduct regular build quality reviews to ensure design intent is achieved and effectively communicated.
  • Define electrostatic discharge (ESD) and cleanliness requirements, along with control processes in the manufacturing environment.
  • Assist production and engineering leadership in identifying opportunities for risk mitigation and simplification of designs and processes to enhance manufacturability.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a manufacturing or quality engineering role.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with QMS standards such as AS9100 and ISO9001.
  • Hands-on experience in qualifying and maintaining manufacturing processes for electronics and/or mechanical assemblies.
  • Experience in reviewing design documentation and implementing first-article inspection plans.
  • Strong skills in SQL and Python, with the ability to manage large datasets and create useful tools, dashboards, and reports.
  • Demonstrated application of process validation and control methods such as PFMEA, design of experiments (DOE), and statistical process control (SPC).
  • Proficiency in using common CAD, PLM, and ERP systems such as Solidworks, Altium, and Arena.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to produce executive-level reports and presentations to effectively convey information about large datasets.

Compensation and Benefits:

All positions offer a comprehensive compensation package that includes equity and robust benefits. Base pay is one component of Astranis's total rewards package, which may also include equity in the form of incentive stock options, high-quality company-subsidized healthcare, disability and life insurance benefits, flexible PTO, 401(K) retirement plans, and complimentary on-site catered meals.

Base Salary Range:

$110,000 - $130,000 USD

U.S. Citizenship, Lawful Permanent Residency, or Refugee/Asylee Status Required:

To comply with U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicants must be U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents of the United States, or other protected individuals as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3).

Astranis is committed to connecting the world and everyone in it, regardless of gender, race, creed, or any other distinction. We believe in fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace and encourage all individuals to contribute their unique perspectives to strengthen our team.
