Job Summary:

We are seeking a highly experienced and skilled Department Head to lead our Materials Design and Analysis Department at the Applied Research Laboratory at Penn State University. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the development of computational models and performance predictions for advanced material systems, as well as leading the development of proposals and projects that further our knowledge of computational modeling and analysis.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of engineers, scientists, and support staff in the development of computational models and performance predictions for advanced material systems

  • Develop and implement strategies to advance the department's research and development goals

  • Collaborate with engineers in other technical areas across the laboratory to ensure alignment and coordination of efforts

  • Plan, staff, and execute programs to ensure all departmental staff and faculty are appropriately and sufficiently tasked at all times

  • Recruit, retain, and define performance expectations of department staff and faculty

  • Identify professional development and training opportunities for department staff and faculty

  • Mentor and encourage creativity in innovative technologies and research

  • Evaluate professional growth through performance reviews

Requirements:

  • Master's or Ph.D. in an Engineering or Science discipline, plus 5 years of related experience

  • Proven track record of leading a team of engineers and scientists in a research and development environment

  • Expertise in computational design and analysis, including CAD and FEA methods and commercial applications

  • Strong proposal and technical writing skills

  • Ability to collaborate with engineers in other technical areas across the laboratory

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active government security clearance
