The Ohio Department of Commerce is in search of a skilled professional to fill the role of Financial Crime Investigator within the Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) Section. This position is primarily designed for remote work, with occasional in-person requirements for training and operational purposes. The BCI serves as the state's official crime laboratory, dedicated to supporting the criminal justice community and ensuring the safety of Ohio residents.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive financial investigations.
  • Analyze and refine findings, addressing fraud-related issues.
  • Maintain a holistic understanding of cases.
  • Develop and convey the financial narrative to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Identify and assess suspicious transactions, entities, and activities.
  • Uncover potential leads that are significant to ongoing investigations.
  • Prepare high-quality final reports and communications adhering to professional standards.
  • Effectively communicate both verbally and in writing with agency management and staff regarding investigations.
  • Apply relevant accounting standards and fraud detection techniques to complex financial crime cases.
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of AICPA Accounting Standards and Fraud Detection Techniques.
  • Assist the Forensic Accounting Supervisor with special projects and research on various issues, including money laundering and asset tracking.
  • Process investigation requests and inform the Supervisor of pertinent facts for evaluation.
  • Serve as an expert witness in court proceedings.
  • Perform additional duties as required.

Qualifications:

Applicants must hold a valid Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license and possess a Bachelor's degree in Audit, Accounting, Business, or a related field. A minimum of four years of full-time experience in forensic accounting, auditing, or investigation is required. A Master's degree or relevant certifications may substitute for one year of experience. Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and strong analytical and communication skills are essential, along with the ability to work independently on complex financial investigations. A valid driver's license is also required.
