Position Overview

The School of Kinesiology is seeking qualified individuals to serve as teaching specialists for Physical Education courses that require additional instructional support beyond the current faculty and graduate assistants.

This recruitment will create a talent pool from which instructors will be selected based on departmental needs throughout the academic year. While individual applications may not receive acknowledgment, they will be reviewed as opportunities arise. Appointments are made on a semester basis, contingent upon the School's teaching requirements. Please note that these positions do not include benefits.

These roles are temporary, non-tenured, Academic Professional and Administrative (P&A) positions, compensated on a per-course basis.

Typically, appointments are made for individual semesters or during the summer, with employment dependent on meeting enrollment targets for courses.

Responsibilities
  • Teaching (70%)
    • Deliver a 1-credit, introductory-level physical education course.
    • Design and implement course syllabus, lessons, lectures, assignments, assessments, grading, and activities.
    • Attend all scheduled class meetings.
  • Course Preparation (20%)
    • Prior to the semester, create the course syllabus, identify resources, and develop course content.
    • Maintain current CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications.
    • Engage in training sessions as directed by the program director.
  • Student Development/Advising (10%)
    • Respond promptly to student inquiries and provide relevant course information.
    • Utilize the university email system for communication with students outside of class.
    • Assess student performance and submit grades.
    • Supervise the facility during class sessions.
Performance Expectations

Facilitate student engagement through activities and lessons that enhance their understanding of the specific physical activity, promoting lifelong participation and the highest standards of etiquette.

Ensure adherence to university and program policies, maintaining a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Master's Degree or Ph.D. in education, physical education, or a related field. Candidates with a Master's will be appointed as Teaching Specialists, while those with a Ph.D. will be designated as Lecturers.
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience specifically related to one of the courses listed in the program description, clearly outlined in the application materials.
  • Current certification in CPR and First Aid, with proof available upon request.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in teaching or advising at the collegiate level.

The University of Minnesota Physical Activity Program (PAP) offers Physical Education courses designed for students of all abilities, focusing on foundational skills and knowledge.

These 1-credit activity-specific classes aim to develop students' understanding of etiquette, safety, and techniques related to various physical activities through lectures, demonstrations, and active participation.

The PAP strives to foster Physical Literacy, enabling students to engage in physical activities throughout their lives.
