Key Responsibilities:
  • Deliver care to donors and patients within the blood donation center.
  • Collaborate effectively to ensure the highest standards of care in a safe environment.
  • Conduct thorough assessments of donor eligibility, including medical history and physical examinations.
  • Adhere to established protocols for donor deferral to ensure safety and compliance.
  • Obtain informed consent from donors prior to any procedures, clearly explaining the donation process and associated risks.
  • Maintain strict infection control practices during all procedures.
  • Ensure accurate labeling and documentation of all collected samples.
  • Monitor donors for any adverse reactions during procedures and respond appropriately.
  • Perform various procedures in accordance with departmental standards, including whole blood collection and therapeutic phlebotomies.
  • Occasionally participate in mobile blood drives, requiring access to transportation.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in the operation and maintenance of specialized equipment used in the department.
  • Utilize documentation systems for tracking donor visits.

Qualifications:
  • Education: Graduate of an accredited nursing program with current Massachusetts registration. A Bachelor of Science in Nursing is required for newly licensed nurses and external candidates.
  • Experience: A minimum of two years of nursing experience in a donor room, apheresis, or dialysis is preferred, with recent experience within the last five years.
  • Leadership: Experience as a Charge Nurse or equivalent role within the past five years is required.
  • Skills: Strong independent decision-making abilities and effective problem-solving skills are essential.
  • Professional Development: Membership in professional organizations is encouraged, and certification in a specialty area is a plus.
  • Flexibility: Willingness to work weekends and adapt to departmental scheduling needs, including day, evening, and weekend shifts.
  • Skills: Proficient phlebotomy or IV skills are required.
  • Customer Service: Exceptional interpersonal skills are essential for providing outstanding service to patients and donors.
