The Clinical Nurse Specialist employs the nursing process as a framework for professional practice, delivering direct nursing care to patients and their families.

Training, evaluation, and competencies for this role are overseen by a Nurse Leader within the department.

Job Description:
Delivers direct patient care while making informed nursing decisions.

Responsible for thoroughly assessing the healthcare needs of individuals or groups, formulating a comprehensive care plan, and ensuring its implementation and evaluation.

Demonstrates decision-making capabilities by merging theoretical knowledge with practical experience in patient care.

Coordinates patient care and supervises assistive personnel to ensure safe, effective, efficient, equitable, and timely patient-centered care.

Shows awareness of the environmental factors affecting patient health and identifies necessary resources to execute the care plan.
Collaborates collegially with other healthcare professionals to assess the healthcare needs of patients and families. Builds trusting relationships with patients and families through effective communication. Acts as a patient advocate.
Maintains annual mandatory education requirements, including emergency skills and unit-based competencies. Identifies personal growth and development needs in collaboration with the unit-based educator or clinical nurse specialist. Engages in activities that foster professional development and may participate in quality improvement initiatives.
Demonstrates a commitment to patients, staff, and the mission of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Individual nursing practice reflects the goals of the Medical Center, with a strong sense of responsibility and accountability for nursing practice and patient safety.

Education:
Graduate of an accredited Nursing Program required. Baccalaureate degree in Nursing strongly preferred.
Experience: 1-3 years related work experience required
License/Certification(s): License Registered Nurse required, and Certificate 1 Basic Life Support required.

Department Specific Job Responsibilities:


Apheresis is a mechanical process similar to dialysis that filters, separates, and returns blood to the patient, while removing specific components such as white blood cells, platelets, or plasma based on the diagnosis.

Apheresis is akin to photopheresis, another procedure utilized by physicians to treat certain patients with a leukemia-like phase of cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. Photopheresis involves treating blood with drugs activated by ultraviolet light to target white blood cells before returning it to the patient.
Administers intravenous medications (non-chemotherapy)
Provides injections, including vitamin B12 or coagulation factors

Blood transfusions:
Red cell, plasma, or platelet transfusions
Conducts therapeutic phlebotomy to remove blood units at specified intervals

Department Specific Job Responsibilities:

APHERESIS
IV insertion skills are advantageous but not mandatory.
Ability to work independently.
