About This Opportunity

The Queens Botanical Garden Society is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Farm Manager to oversee the daily operations of our 1-acre organic farm. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for ensuring the farm's productivity, sustainability, and compliance with organic farming practices.

Responsibilities:
  • Farmer Operations: Perform all labor necessary to maintain the farm, including crop production, soil management, and farm infrastructure maintenance.
  • Crop Management: Prioritize crop production to meet donation goals to local food pantries, while ensuring optimal crop yields and quality.
  • Donation Coordination: Manage relationships with local food pantries and coordinate donations of produce to support food relief efforts.
  • Staff Supervision: Supervise part-time staff providing farm operations and education support, ensuring a high level of expertise and customer service.
  • Farm Access and Education: Facilitate farm access to the public through farm open hours, tours, and farm stands, promoting education and community engagement.
  • Workshops and Tours: Lead farm workshops and conduct tours, sharing knowledge and expertise with visitors.
  • Intern Program Management: Oversee all aspects of the intern program, from onboarding to scheduling to curriculum development, ensuring a high-quality learning experience.
  • Collaboration and Research: Collaborate with the Director of Programs and other departments to initiate and implement new programming, particularly in urban agriculture, and conduct research for grant opportunities.
  • Farm Operations Management: Manage farm operations, including current programming, and maintain orderly records of crops, purchases, and other farm-related data.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Maintain equipment and farm structures, and repair damaged structures on the farm.
  • Inventory Management: Maintain an inventory of equipment and tools, ensuring optimal farm performance.
  • Technical Assistance: Provide technical assistance for the Children's Garden as needed.
Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Agriculture or a related field, or equivalent agricultural sciences certificate/course work, or three years of hands-on applicable experience, including at least one farm growing season.
  • Farming Skills: Strong farming skills, including knowledge of organic farming practices, composting, and integrated pest management.
  • Education and Supervision: Experience in education, supervising, mentoring, or coaching, with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Physical Demands: Ability to move 50+ pounds, work outdoors in all seasons, and drive large vehicles.
  • Team Player: Self-motivated, team player with basic carpentry skills, basic knowledge of MS Office, and other basic computer skills.
  • Language Skills: Bilingual, Spanish or Chinese, preferred.
