The Certified Surgical Technician is responsible for managing the instruments, supplies, and equipment essential for surgical operations.

WORK SCHEDULE:
Positions may be available across various shifts.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Verify the availability of supplies and equipment required for surgical procedures.
  • Prepare self and surgical team members by scrubbing, gowning, and gloving.
  • Organize a sterile table with necessary instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications, ensuring all items are in optimal condition.
  • Conduct appropriate counts with the circulator prior to the procedure and before closing the incision.
  • Assist in draping the sterile field.
  • Pass instruments, retractors, sutures, and other materials to the surgeon during the operation.
  • Exhibit the ability to anticipate the needs of the surgical team.
  • Maintain the highest standards of sterile technique throughout the procedure.
  • Handle surgical specimens with care and safety.
  • Manage sharps and medications in accordance with operating room safety protocols.

EDUCATION/LICENSE:
Certification is required upon hire, unless you are a new graduate. New graduates must obtain certification within six months of their hiring date. Acceptable certifications include:
  • National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) – renewal every year.
  • National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) – renewal every two years.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
On-the-job training is required, with a minimum of 1.5 years and an 8-week focused orientation period.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to sit for up to 1 hour daily, stand for up to 8 hours daily (possibly 6 hours at a time), and walk for 8-10 hours daily (up to 2 hours at a time). Frequent manual dexterity is required for handling and twisting/turning. Must be able to lift and carry objects up to 10 pounds consistently, and frequently lift and carry objects up to 25 pounds. Ability to push objects over 100 pounds is also necessary. Frequent bending, stooping, and reaching above shoulder level are required. Quick movement and response are essential, along with the ability to hear normal conversations and perceive high and low frequencies. Visual acuity for general, near, far, color, and peripheral vision is required, along with depth perception and the ability to tolerate visual monotony.
