Position Summary:
The Certified Surgical Technician is responsible for managing the instruments, supplies, and equipment required during surgical operations.
Work Schedule:
Positions may be available across various shifts. Opportunities include:
- Full-time: 36 or 40 hours per week
- Part-time: less than 36 hours per week
- Per Diem: minimum of 2 shifts/month
- Holiday and weekend obligations as per unit and organizational policies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Verify supplies and equipment necessary for surgical procedures.
- Prepare self and surgical team members with scrubs, gowns, and gloves.
- Set up a sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions required for the procedure, ensuring they are in optimal condition.
- Conduct appropriate counts with the circulator before the operation and prior to closing the incision.
- Assist in draping the sterile field.
- Provide instruments, retractors, sutures, etc., to the surgeon during the procedure.
- Anticipate the needs of the surgical team effectively.
- Maintain the highest standards of sterile technique throughout the procedure.
- Handle surgical specimens safely and appropriately.
- Manage sharps and medications in accordance with operating room safety protocols.
Qualifications:
- Certification is required upon hire, unless you are a new graduate. New graduates must obtain certification within six months of the hiring date.
- Acceptable certifications include:
- National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) – 1-year renewal cycle
- National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) – 2-year renewal cycle.
Training and Experience:
- On-the-job training is required, with a minimum of 1.5 years and an 8-week concentrated orientation period.
Physical and Sensory Requirements:
- Ability to sit for up to 1 hour, stand for up to 8 hours (possibly 6 hours at a time), and walk for 8-10 hours (up to 2 hours at a time).
- Frequent manual dexterity for handling and twisting/turning.
- Ability to lift and carry objects up to 10 pounds consistently; up to 25 pounds frequently; and push objects over 100 pounds as needed.
- Frequent bending, stooping, and reaching above shoulder level.
- Must be able to respond quickly and have the ability to hear and see as it relates to normal conversation and various visual tasks.
