Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Public Works Supervisor to join our team at the City of Hermosa Beach. As a key member of our Public Works Department, you will be responsible for coordinating, supervising, and participating in the work of staff in various areas, including fleet maintenance, parks, and sewers/storm drain, street lighting, and building maintenance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise and coordinate the work of crews in the Public Works Department, ensuring compliance with contractual requirements and City codes.
  • Work with other City departments to coordinate projects that include Public Works duties.
  • Implement comprehensive inspection procedures to ensure the highest standard of repairs and maintenance and safety practices.
  • Report malfunctions and damages and propose remedies to the Superintendent.
  • Provide input, implement, and monitor maintenance schedules and quality control procedures; manage work orders and budget preparation.
  • Manage contractors responsible for providing city services.
  • Research purchasing of materials, supplies, and equipment.
  • Test new products and related items and make recommendations based on these tests.
  • Train crews in the use of new equipment, safety, and standard operating procedures.
  • Check related facilities and report malfunctions.
  • Receive and respond to service complaints from the public and City departments.
  • Supervise employees in their areas of work, including maintenance methods, procedures, techniques, and safe work habits.
  • Supervise and assign the work of crew members, including special projects.
  • Manage employee performance and disciplinary issues and seek guidance and approval from the Superintendent.
  • Complete Annual Employee Performance Evaluation forms for assigned staff and meet with staff regarding their performance.
  • Assist with interviews as needed.
  • Provide guidance on difficult and complex problems.
  • Prepare and issue work orders and evaluate work upon completion.
  • Write necessary reports and coordinate maintenance and repair work with other City departments.
  • Maintain inventory of tools, parts, and order supplies and materials as necessary.
  • May act as superior in his absence.
Requirements
  • Knowledge of operations, services, and activities of a maintenance program.
  • Principles and practice of supervision.
  • Ability to select, supervise, motivate, and train assigned staff.
  • Supervise and evaluate the work of others.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, plans, and specifications.
  • Interpret and enforce policies, codes, rules, and regulations.
  • Make accurate calculations.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate records and reports.
  • Respond to complaints and inquiries from the public in a tactful manner.
  • Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with City employees and the general public.
  • Provide effective and high-quality customer service.
Education and Experience

Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain this required knowledge would be:

Education achievement equivalent to graduation from high school and a minimum of two years of experience at the semi-skilled level in parks or public works maintenance activities, including pipe laying and placing and finishing of concrete.

Licenses/Certificates

Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License with a safe driving record is required and must be maintained as valid during the course of employment.
