Principal Progression Designer
Sony Bend Studio, the acclaimed creator of renowned titles, is on the lookout for exceptional talent to join our dedicated and innovative team in developing our next major AAA project.
We seek a Principal Progression Designer who will be responsible for crafting and executing the fundamental economies and progression systems that enhance player engagement, satisfaction, and retention. This pivotal role allows for significant contributions to our gaming projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with project leaders to devise strategies aimed at engaging and retaining players from targeted demographics throughout extensive gameplay experiences.
- Implement these strategies by designing and developing enjoyable and meaningful progression systems. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to establish the necessary tools and processes for executing these designs.
- Create and maintain comprehensive documentation of progression systems and related features, including conceptual design briefs, detailed spreadsheet modeling, and data visualization.
- Communicate strategic priorities and design solutions across the organization while defining and promoting best practices.
- Guide developers in the design and creation of new content, assets, features, and rewards.
- Work with User-Experience Research (UXR) to build robust player models, test hypotheses, and predict outcomes, ensuring an intuitive and elegant player experience that meets the complex needs of our player base.
- Define key performance indicators (KPIs) and support telemetry implementation, testing, and enhancements.
- Analyze KPI data to develop actionable insights that inform the iteration of progression systems and improve player retention, leading and implementing necessary changes.
- Mentor designers and collaborate with studio leadership to recruit and nurture talent.
- Over 10 years of senior experience in video game progression design or related fields, with a proven track record of commercially successful titles.
- Extensive knowledge of current trends, innovations, and competitive strategies in game progression design.
- A player-centric approach to design, with empathy for gamers and a profound understanding of player motivation, needs, and psychology.
- Exceptional communication and presentation skills, capable of articulating complex game principles, strategies, and solutions to a diverse audience of stakeholders.
- Expertise in data management, analysis, and visualization.
- A growth mindset, driven by curiosity and a genuine commitment to continuous learning.
- Highly collaborative, advocating for inclusive and accessible design while fostering diverse talent within the team.
- Ability to prioritize and manage tasks across sprints, milestones, and development phases.
- Willingness to contribute hands-on when necessary.
- Advanced degree or equivalent in economics, data science, cognitive psychology, or related fields.
- Experience with proprietary game engines and/or agile development methodologies.
- Proficiency in visual scripting and/or coding.
