Design Mechanisms for Space Flight

At Blue Origin, we're pushing the boundaries of space exploration and development. As a Mechanisms Design Engineer II, you'll play a critical role in designing and developing mechanisms for space flight, including engine gimbaling mechanisms, docking systems, solar and radiator deployment systems, hatches, and deployable or retractable external covers.

This position is part of the Space Systems Development (SSD) business unit, which develops next-generation concepts and systems to advance our future of living and working in space sustainably. You'll work directly with NASA and our team supporting the Commercial LEO Destinations (CLD) program, contributing to the development of the Orbital Reef Space Station.

As a key member of the Structures and Mechanisms Team, you'll be responsible for designing and analyzing spacecraft mechanisms, ensuring safe and reliable hardware that meets requirements within allocated cost and schedule constraints. You'll also participate in subsystem level testing, including planning, execution, data reduction, and analysis.

Responsibilities:

  • Design mechanisms for space flight, including engine gimbaling mechanisms, docking systems, solar and radiator deployment systems, hatches, and deployable or retractable external covers.
  • Participate in the entire design cycle of flight hardware, including conceptual and detailed design, trade studies, structural analysis, development testing, and qualification.
  • Create documentation for assembly and testing of development and flight hardware.
  • Participate in subsystem level testing, including planning, execution, data reduction, and analysis.
  • Develop component specifications and manage suppliers.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering.
  • 2+ years of experience designing aerospace or equivalent type mechanical system elements within aircraft, spacecraft, or launch vehicles.
  • Strong mechanical design, integration, and mechanism analysis skills using 3D modeling and simulation tools (CREO preferred).
  • Proficient in technical writing, communicating sophisticated ideas clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with GD&T analysis (ASME Y14.5) and performing tolerance stacks.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing, assembly, integration, and qualification testing.

Benefits:

  • Medical, dental, vision, basic and supplemental life insurance.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • Short and long-term disability.
  • 401(k) with a company match of up to 5%.
  • Education Support Program.

Equal Employment Opportunity:
