Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Librarian to join our team at the City of Santa Clarita, CA. As a key member of our library staff, you will be responsible for providing high-level reference and subject matter assistance to patrons, overseeing the day-to-day activities of a designated service area, and leading library staff and volunteers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Reference and Research Services: Provide general reference assistance, reader's advisory, and user instruction to patrons; assist patrons with reference questions and selection of materials, periodicals, and other print and non-print materials verbally and in writing.
  • Collection Development: Participate in collection development, analyze, determine needs, select, and deselect library collections in assigned specific subject areas.
  • Program Development: Develop or assist in the development of programs for a variety of age groups that require verbal instructions, a presentation, or a demonstration.
  • Technical Support: Provide technical support to employees and patrons in the operations of computer equipment; troubleshoot and resolve basic workstation hardware and software problems.
  • Leadership and Supervision: Serve as the Person in Charge (PIC) of the library staff and building in the absence of the Library Administrator; resolve patron conflicts; guide and support staff; rectify maintenance issues; evaluate and provide feedback on staff performance.
  • Community Engagement: Establish positive working relationships with City employees, outside vendors, community members, and patrons; represent the library and City at various meetings and events.
Requirements
  • Education: Master's Degree in Library and/or Information Science from a graduate school accredited by the American Library Association.
  • Experience: Two years of progressively responsible professional public library experience; supervisory or lead experience is desirable.
  • Skills: Strong knowledge of current trends in the field of library science; knowledge of current classification and cataloging systems and practices; strong leadership ability with the skills to guide, motivate, and support staff; strong customer service skills and the ability to provide program information to patrons in a professional, helpful manner.
