It is the largest facility within the Duke Health system, featuring 1,048 patient beds and 65 operating rooms, along with comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services, including a regional emergency/trauma center.
Position Summary
The Duke Respiratory Care External Traveler Program offers short-term assignments for skilled professionals to address staffing needs typically filled by external traveler Respiratory Therapists (RTs). This role involves working on a contract basis for up to two 13-week periods at designated locations within the Duke University Health System.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as outlined in the Respiratory Care Services protocols.
- Administer oxygen and aerosolized medications.
- Initiate and manage various modes of mechanical ventilation.
- Perform essential procedures such as CPR, pulse oximetry monitoring, and arterial blood gas punctures.
- Engage in diagnostic cardiopulmonary procedures and pulmonary function studies.
- Ensure the proper setup and functionality of all necessary equipment for patient care.
- Maintain compliance with infectious disease standards during patient interactions.
- Provide education to patients, families, and healthcare team members.
- Document all relevant clinical information in patient medical records.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
Education: Completion of a two-year CoARC accredited respiratory care program (Associate's Degree or equivalent).
Experience: A minimum of one year of experience as a Respiratory Therapist is required; two or more years as a Registered Respiratory Therapist is preferred.
Licensure and Certification: North Carolina State Licensure or Provisional License, along with certification from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) if applicable. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and any additional relevant certifications (ACLS, PALS) are also required.
Skills and Abilities: Candidates must possess the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed clinical decisions and interact effectively with patients of all ages. Annual skill and safety compliance requirements must be maintained, along with continuing education units (CEUs) for licensure.
