Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Communications Specialist to join our team at the City of Gainesville. As a key member of our communications team, you will be responsible for developing and implementing effective communication strategies to promote our products and services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement communication plans to support short and long-range objectives
  • Assist in the development of plans to support specific communication objectives and monitor progress
  • Provide support for City/GRU initiatives and events as needed
  • Identify prospective new customers and needs for new and emerging services
  • Work closely with communication staff and other City/GRU departments to coordinate communication objectives
  • Develop communication materials across multiple platforms for various target audiences
  • Plan, assign, coordinate, supervise, and evaluate the work of support staff, interns, and volunteers
  • Serve as GRU's assistant public information officer, spokesperson, and/or media liaison during emergencies and non-emergencies
  • Develop information pieces for and maintain relationships with various target audiences
  • Design and implement or obtain customer research to evaluate and quantify results
  • Make recommendations to management regarding strategies to help GRU meet communication objectives
  • Assist in the development of the department's annual budget
  • Participate in industry and professional organizations and associations
  • Work closely with utilities sales team to meet sales objectives
  • Manage content on utilities customer-facing and internal websites
  • Create literature and other forms of communication for utilities
  • Create promotional materials, both print and electronic
  • Work with advertisers and advertising agencies for timely and useable ad submissions
  • Copyedit, proofread, and revise communication materials
  • Create and distribute press releases, media advisories, case studies, white papers, executive biographies, social media content, and speaking proposals
  • Participate in departmental media on-call schedule
  • Facilitate internal meetings at the executive level
  • Promote products and services through public relations initiatives
  • Research media coverage and industry trends
  • Develop fresh story ideas
  • Conduct extensive media outreach
  • Prepare briefing materials
  • Coordinate scheduling and logistics
  • Coordinate conferences, trade shows, and press interviews
  • Manage information
  • Prepare agendas and conduct research
  • Identify, develop, and execute communication strategies for key media contacts and customer references
  • Produce image and video content for internal and external audiences
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in English, marketing, public relations, advertising, journalism, or communications
  • Four years of experience in communications, public relations, journalism, or other related work activities promoting corporate communications
  • Valid United States Driver License required at time of appointment
  • Ability to work outside normal business hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor to communicate and work effectively with diverse population segments and community organizations
  • Ability to conduct and analyze research and develop strategies to act upon research findings
  • Ability to independently review source materials on a wide range of topics and effectively communicate financial and technical information
  • Ability to plan, coordinate, and implement special events
  • Ability to analyze problems and exercise sound professional judgment in achieving results
  • Ability to keep records and prepare reports
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
