Mountain View, California, United States Lightmatter Full time
Job Overview

Principal Analog Architect

Lightmatter is at the forefront of developing chips that facilitate extreme-scale artificial intelligence computing clusters. We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Analog Architect who is enthusiastic about innovation and tackling complex technical challenges. This role is crucial for those who aspire to contribute to pioneering work, such as the creation of the world's first optically accelerated computers.

The Principal Analog Architect will collaborate with both external teams and internal engineering departments to launch transformative products into the market. In this capacity, you will play a key role in the design and development of cutting-edge analog architecture solutions aimed at delivering high-volume products tailored to our clientele. Your responsibilities will include producing comprehensive technical documentation that outlines the requirements for the engineering team, as well as engaging with our diverse engineering teams to model and analyze potential solutions.

This position demands an in-depth understanding of high-frequency systems-on-chip (SoCs), high-speed (40+ GHz) electro-optic interfaces, silicon photonics, and 3D integration. Creativity, analytical prowess, and effective communication skills are essential. You may also represent Lightmatter at technical conferences, showcasing our leadership in technology.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Innovative problem-solving and ownership of architectures, characterization plans, and packaging strategies for successful high-volume products.
  • Act as the AMS architecture lead for Lightmatter's Passage product, collaborating closely with the architecture and chip-design teams.
  • Directly engage with top-tier semiconductor clients throughout the product development lifecycle at the system architecture level.
  • Design high-speed (50G and beyond) circuit blocks for optical transceivers, including drivers, TIAs, equalizers, ADC/DACs, PLLs, and CDRs interfacing with SerDes.
  • Draft, review, and validate architectural specifications, and work with product and applications engineering teams to create customer-facing product datasheets and reference designs.
  • Lead the development of methodologies and simulation workflows for electro-optic SoC co-design.
  • Collaborate with the product team to shape our future technological and product roadmap in alignment with industry trends.
  • Work alongside test and validation engineers to ensure hardware performance aligns with simulation predictions, thereby achieving high performance and yield.
  • Engage across disciplines—electronics, photonics, and mechanical engineering—to define requirements and solutions for circuit blocks, SoCs, debugging, and validation.
  • Publish and present innovative ideas and participate in leading technical conferences.

Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or a related field with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience, or a Master's degree with at least 12 years of relevant experience.
  • At least 8 years of experience in broadband, RF, and/or mm-wave design.
  • Strong grasp of signal processing and signal integrity in optical communication.
  • Expertise in designing high-speed and power-efficient optical transceivers using advanced CMOS technology.
  • Proficient in simulation tools such as Cadence Virtuoso, Cadence Spectre, Verilog-A, and IBIS-AMI simulators.
  • Familiarity with strategies to mitigate design impacts from PVT (process, voltage & temperature) variations and optimize designs for yield.
  • Comprehensive understanding of designs and layouts that enhance speed and power while minimizing noise and crosstalk.
  • Demonstrated success in delivering high-volume silicon products to market, along with a solid understanding of the silicon product development process.
  • Exceptional communication skills with customers and vendors.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability and willingness to collaborate within a cross-disciplinary team.
  • 3 years of experience in electronic-photonic co-design and co-simulation for transceivers.
  • Knowledge of SerDes and mixed-signal interfaces.
  • A strong record of publications and/or patents.

Benefits:

  • Comprehensive Health Care Plan (Medical, Dental & Vision)
  • 401k matching
  • Life Insurance (Basic, Voluntary & AD&D)
  • Generous Time Off (Vacation, Sick & Public Holidays)
  • Paid Family Leave
  • Short Term & Long Term Disability
  • Training & Development
  • Flexible, hybrid workplace model
  • Stock Option Plan

We offer competitive compensation. The base salary range for this role, including all US locations, is $220,000 to $270,000. Your base salary will be determined based on location, experience, educational background, and market data.
