Compensation Overview

The annual base salary range for this position reflects a nationwide market range, accounting for various factors such as role complexity, location, and candidate qualifications. In addition to base salary, employees may be eligible for performance-based cash incentives as part of our comprehensive compensation and benefits package.

What Is the Opportunity?

The Bond & Specialty Insurance (BSI) division offers management and professional liability, cyber, crime insurance, and surety bonds for businesses of all sizes. The BSI Claim Counsel team is responsible for the thorough investigation, analysis, evaluation, and resolution of claims and related litigation, ensuring exceptional customer service and optimal claim outcomes. As a key member of our team, you will provide legal guidance to underwriting and non-attorney claim colleagues while engaging in strategic initiatives within BSI claims. The Private/Non-Profit Team offers executive and organizational management liability coverage to privately held companies, non-profit entities, and certain governmental public entities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Adhere to operational policies to analyze, investigate, and resolve BSI claims of varying severity with moderate supervision.
  • Prepare and present management reports that accurately reflect loss development, financial exposure, reserve adjustments, coverage issues, and recovery strategies.
  • Manage outside counsel effectively, utilizing litigation management plans and budgets.
  • Communicate significant claim exposures with underwriting.
  • Develop skills to identify recovery opportunities and coordinate efforts with the Recovery Management Unit and claims management.
  • Attend mediations, settlement conferences, field office visits, trials, and depositions as necessary.
  • Enhance policy interpretation and coverage analysis skills, including drafting coverage opinions supported by case law.
  • Improve negotiation skills for settlements and resolutions, reviewing releases and settlement agreements.
  • Support underwriting marketing initiatives, including participation in broker visits and risk mitigation seminars, and authoring customer-focused materials.
  • Monitor market conditions, conduct research, and create reference materials to inform colleagues on legal matters affecting underwriting and claims decisions.
  • Obtain and maintain necessary adjusters' licenses.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Ideal Candidate Qualifications

  • A minimum of five years of relevant legal or claims handling experience.
  • Proven ability to navigate conflict and resolve issues professionally.
  • Strong decision-making skills and negotiation capabilities within designated authority limits.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate coverage determinations.
  • Effective time management skills, capable of managing multiple priorities with attention to detail.
  • Ability to cultivate and maintain collaborative relationships with colleagues, clients, and business partners.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Juris Doctorate Degree.
  • Licensed and in good standing to practice law in the relevant jurisdiction.
  • At least two years of relevant legal experience.
