Importance of This Role:

The Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) process offers a comprehensive overview of the significant risks confronting an organization. It empowers boards and management to grasp the essential components of enterprise risks when making pivotal business decisions aligned with the strategic objectives of the organization. The ERM Director plays a crucial role in spearheading, innovating, and strategically advancing the corporate ERM framework to identify, assess, and oversee the organization's risks. This position is integral to the execution and enhancement of the ERM program, providing vital insights to executive leadership and the Audit Committee/Board of Trustees for effective oversight of the enterprise risk management process. Additionally, this role supports the organization's Own Risk and Solvency Assessment (ORSA). The ERM Program Director brings extensive business process knowledge, a broad operational perspective, and offers solutions for business risk challenges.

Daily Responsibilities:
  • Develop, implement, and manage the organization-wide risk management framework and processes, including the ongoing development of the enterprise risk universe, risk profile, and risk appetite statements.
  • Oversee and coordinate the annual processes for the Own Risk and Solvency Assessment (ORSA), collaborating with various business units to complete the necessary reports.
  • Work with management to create mitigation strategies for high-priority risks, ensuring the establishment, communication, and enforcement of the organization's risk appetite statements to foster accountability.
  • Assist executive leadership in identifying, evaluating, and managing significant business risks, facilitating cross-functional collaboration for risk identification and response in strategic initiatives.
  • Present complex information clearly and effectively to diverse audiences, including executive leadership and the Audit Committee, preparing and delivering ERM updates as required.
  • Build and maintain essential relationships across the organization to gather necessary information for audits and risk-related recommendations as requested by senior leadership or regulatory bodies.
  • Engage in special projects and committees as assigned by senior leadership.
  • Cultivate a high-performance team culture that promotes teamwork, innovation, and objectivity, while developing team members to achieve high levels of competence and productivity.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in business or a related field.
  • Advanced understanding of the health care and insurance sectors, along with ERM methodologies.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Blue Cross operations, products, and systems.

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Acceptance of this director-level position requires signing a confidentiality and intellectual property agreement as a condition of employment.
  • 8+ years of relevant professional experience, including 3+ years in management or leadership roles. All relevant experience, including education and military service, will be considered.
  • Professional certifications such as CPA, CIA, CFE, CRMA, or similar designations.
  • Experience in enterprise risk management, auditing, project management, or related fields, preferably within a large health plan.
  • Ability to influence leadership through effective communication of complex information.
  • Proficient knowledge of ERM principles and methodologies.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and project management skills, with the ability to adapt to changing environments.
  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills, capable of collaborating effectively across various influence styles.
  • Business acumen and interpersonal skills to navigate sensitive and complex situations within the organization.
  • Ability to lead and motivate ad-hoc teams to achieve high-quality outcomes.
