Cemetery Operations Supervisor

Job Overview:

This role involves overseeing the upkeep of cemetery grounds and facilities within a designated area. It is a hands-on supervisory position that necessitates expertise in staff motivation, landscape upkeep, general maintenance, and addressing public inquiries.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Organizes tasks and delegates responsibilities to various work crews, which may include unskilled, skilled, or semi-skilled workers. Suggests modifications in resource distribution, priorities, or operational programs. May require responding to after-hours emergencies and mobilizing personnel as needed.
  • Interprets blueprints and inspects ongoing projects to ensure compliance with municipal specifications. Monitors work across multiple locations and diverse projects.
  • Manages inventory of supplies and materials, recommending purchases when necessary.
  • Conducts maintenance tasks, utilizes hand tools, and may operate machinery such as sanitation vehicles, backhoes, pickup trucks, loaders, sweepers, tampers, and mowers as required. Ensures all equipment is maintained properly and operated safely. Responsible for training staff on safety protocols.
  • Prepares payroll and authorizes leave requests. Submits and organizes work orders, safety reports, material requisitions, and maintenance logs. Monitors fixed assets to ensure proper tracking and maintenance.
  • Ensures that work adheres to quality standards. Addresses performance issues following established guidelines. Maintains records of employee performance and makes recommendations to management regarding personnel matters, including evaluations, recognition, disciplinary actions, and equipment needs. Provides training and assessment for team members. May assume managerial responsibilities in the absence of the Manager.
  • Collaborates with other city departments, public organizations, and community groups to plan and execute projects or resolve issues. May participate in community meetings and works closely with event coordinators to ensure public safety and the protection of city assets.
  • Performs additional related duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in cemetery operations is advantageous due to the specialized nature of grounds maintenance.
  • Understanding of grounds maintenance in commercial, park, or cemetery settings, along with supervisory experience.
  • This position will also serve as a backup to the burial supervisor.
  • Work schedule may vary and could include evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent, with four (4) years of landscape maintenance experience, including at least two (2) years in a supervisory role. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Familiarity with maintenance practices, including fertilizers, irrigation systems, herbicides, and sanitation equipment.
  • Experience with snow and ice removal techniques and equipment to ensure public safety.
  • Knowledge of public sanitation practices, including waste management and cleaning procedures.
  • Must be able to obtain a Noncommercial Pesticide Applicators License within six months of hire.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license or equivalent, with the ability to obtain a Class "B" Commercial Driver's License if required.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, along with proficiency in computer applications.

Working Conditions:

  • Moderate to heavy physical activity is required, including pushing, pulling, or lifting moderately heavy objects. Exposure to chemicals, varying temperatures, noise, dust, and fumes is expected.
  • Intermittent exposure to stress due to public interactions.
