Summary:

The primary role of the School Counselor is to provide comprehensive counseling services to students, ensuring their academic and personal development. The School Counselor is tasked with effectively managing the counseling department and implementing programs that align with the policies established by the Board of Education and district regulations.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide counseling to students, offering guidance on attendance, enrollment, academic performance, scheduling, and career opportunities while maintaining thorough records.
  • Ensure a confidential and supportive counseling environment.
  • Conduct individual and group counseling sessions based on identified needs, following a recognized guidance curriculum.
  • Collaborate with parents, school staff, and community agencies to assist students facing challenges, providing information on academic and extracurricular options.
  • Guide students in making informed post-secondary and vocational decisions.
  • Assist students and families with college, scholarship, and job application processes, and provide orientation for new students.
  • Identify and refer students with special needs for appropriate support.
  • Support parents in tracking their children's academic progress.
  • Offer feedback to educators regarding student needs.
  • Provide counseling for students transitioning out of the school system.
  • Oversee the administration and interpretation of standardized assessments.
  • Engage in curriculum development and participate in faculty committees.
  • Attend staff meetings and professional development workshops.
  • Facilitate sessions on personal growth, school adjustment, career development, and related topics.
  • Maintain regular communication with teachers, administrators, and external agency personnel.
  • Organize counseling staff and delegate responsibilities effectively.
  • Manage the budget for the guidance department and coordinate summer school registration.
  • Consult with the principal regarding the guidance program's operation and implementation.
  • Conduct regular departmental meetings with staff.
  • Maintain accurate student records.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the guidance program.
Other Duties:

Perform additional responsibilities as assigned that are related to the position.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

A Master's degree in guidance and counseling along with significant counseling or teaching experience. Equivalent training and experience may be considered. A valid Louisiana Ancillary Teaching Certificate in Counseling is required.
