Summary:
The primary role of the School Counselor is to provide guidance and support to students, focusing on their academic and personal development. The School Counselor is tasked with managing the counseling department effectively, ensuring that the program aligns with the policies set forth by the Board of Education and the district's regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Offer counseling to students, guiding them on matters related to attendance, enrollment, academics, and career opportunities while maintaining accurate records.
- Ensure a confidential and supportive counseling environment.
- Provide individual and group counseling sessions tailored to specific needs as per a recognized guidance curriculum.
- Collaborate with parents, school staff, and community agencies to assist students facing challenges. Facilitate discussions with students about curricular and extracurricular options and their potential career paths.
- Support students in making informed post-secondary or vocational decisions.
- Assist students and their families in preparing and submitting college, scholarship, and job applications, as well as orienting new students.
- Identify, refer, and ensure appropriate placement for students with special needs.
- Help parents track their children's academic progress.
- Provide constructive feedback to educators regarding student needs.
- Offer counseling for students transitioning out of the school system, including transfers and dropouts.
- Oversee the coordination and interpretation of standardized assessments.
- Engage in curriculum development and participate in faculty committees.
- Attend staff meetings and workshops sponsored by the department.
- Prepare and deliver presentations on personal growth, school adjustment, career development, and related topics.
- Facilitate discussions with teachers, administrators, parents, and external agency personnel.
- Provide career counseling and information to students.
- Organize counseling staff and delegate responsibilities effectively.
- Manage the budget for the guidance department and coordinate summer school registration.
- Regularly consult with the principal regarding the guidance program's overall operation and implementation.
- Conduct regular departmental meetings with staff.
- Maintain comprehensive student records.
- Supervise the evaluation of the guidance program.
Perform additional duties as assigned that are related to the functions of the position.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
A Master's degree in guidance and counseling, along with significant counseling or teaching experience. Equivalent training and experience may be considered. A valid Louisiana Ancillary Teaching Certificate in Counseling is required.
