The Stemeseder organization is looking for a skilled NAGPRA Collections Manager to lead initiatives related to the curation and compliance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). This role will involve collaboration with the Assistant Director of Repatriation within the Center for Archaeology and Society Repository.

The NAGPRA Collections Manager will be responsible for overseeing the identification, documentation, and preparation of NAGPRA collections. Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct thorough background research to establish archaeological and cultural contexts using archival materials.
  • Assist in the development of necessary documentation for curatorial management and NAGPRA compliance.
  • Ensure collections are prepared according to the established processes of the Center for Archaeology and Society Repository.
  • Locate and document relevant collections, assign artifact types for cultural affiliation, and catalog according to modern archaeological and museum standards.
  • Assess removal provenance and context, entering collection information into appropriate databases.


Minimum Qualifications:

A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field AND three (3) years of related experience; OR, Seven (7) years of relevant experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education that demonstrates comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities.


Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with NAGPRA-related collections documentation (1-2 years)
Demonstrated understanding of the archaeology, material culture, history, and ethnography of the American Southwest
Evidence of a Bachelor's degree focused on archaeology, anthropology, or museum studies
Knowledge of proper handling techniques for curated archaeological collections
Experience in archival research
Supervisory experience with students
Proficiency in organizational and project management skills
Strong communication abilities
Experience working both independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
