Position: Pediatric Respiratory Care Technician
Duke University Hospital is seeking a Pediatric Respiratory Care Technician—an active respiratory care student who has successfully completed the first year of an accredited respiratory program—to support our mission of Advancing Health Together.
Position OverviewExecute diagnostic and therapeutic clinical procedures as outlined in the Respiratory Care Services scope of practice. Responsibilities are carried out under the guidance of a Registered Respiratory Therapist and in accordance with physician directives.
Key Responsibilities- Validate physician orders for correctness and relevance.
- Comprehend pharmacological implications, dosages, and reactions to adverse drug effects.
- Collaborate with healthcare providers based on patient assessments and established protocols. Provide education to patients, families, physicians, nursing staff, and other healthcare team members.
- Monitor patient responses to all therapies. Document findings in the patient medical record. Relay critical clinical information during patient rounds and transitions.
- Conduct diagnostic cardiopulmonary procedures, including nasotracheal and artificial airway suctioning, arterial blood gas sampling, pulse oximetry, and EKGs.
- Identify life-threatening situations and initiate appropriate interventions, including CPR and bag-mask ventilation.
- Ensure the proper setup, safety, and functionality of all equipment and supplies required for patient care.
- Adhere to all infection control standards during patient care procedures.
- Engage in quality improvement initiatives.
- Maintain all necessary safety and life support certifications as required.
- Capable of delivering the following therapies:
- Oxygen Supply Systems
- Manual Resuscitation
- Oxygen Administration
- Humidity and Aerosol Therapy
- Small Volume Nebulizer
- MDI Administration
- Incentive Spirometry
- Airway Clearance Therapy
- Arterial Puncture
- ECG (if performed by the hiring institution)
- Patient Reporting
Currently enrolled in a two-year accredited respiratory care program (Associate's Degree or equivalent) and in good academic standing.
Completion of the first semester of the respiratory care program is mandatory.
ExperienceNo prior experience is required beyond clinical affiliations associated with the respiratory program.
Licensure and CertificationThe student Respiratory Care Provider must register with the Board prior to performing respiratory care procedures as a Respiratory Care Technician and will receive an approval letter from the Board. A copy of this approval letter must be provided to the employer.
Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and any other relevant certifications as required by the institution.
Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesPossess the knowledge necessary to make informed clinical decisions and engage effectively with patients of varying ages.
Validation of skills and competencies for the responsibilities associated with this role is essential.
Must fulfill annual skill and safety compliance requirements.
Must adhere to North Carolina's annual licensing requirements for continuing education units (CEUs).
Demonstrated customer service and communication skills are crucial.
This role involves interaction with patients of all ages, their families, physicians, nursing staff, and other healthcare professionals.
Work is conducted across various areas of the Duke University Health System at the applicable hiring location.
Physical demands may include lifting or pushing over 30 pounds, as well as walking, climbing, and bending.
