New York, New York, United States HealthCorps Full time

Are you passionate about enhancing community health and fostering the next generation of wellness advocates? HealthCorps offers a unique opportunity to engage in meaningful work that impacts youth both mentally and physically.
About Us

HealthCorps is a national non-profit organization dedicated to addressing health disparities in communities through innovative programming that provides engaging experiences for teens in education, leadership, and community service. We empower young individuals to become agents of change within their families, schools, and neighborhoods. Our initiative is rooted in the belief that limited access to health education can result in lifelong social, emotional, and physical challenges.
Your Role

We are seeking a dynamic, friendly, and proactive individual to implement the wellness initiative, Teens Make Health Happen, in several middle or high schools. This program empowers teens to make healthier lifestyle choices for themselves and their families. As a TMHH Mentor, you will act as a near-peer guide to local students throughout the semester, gaining hands-on experience in leading health and wellness activities. You will support teens in organizing and executing wellness programming, including lunchtime demonstrations, fitness challenges, and community enhancement projects.
Key Responsibilities

  • Build Strong Connections: Collaborate with teen wellness leaders and site partners to ensure effective implementation of HealthCorps' programming across multiple school locations. Work closely with your Regional Program Manager and fellow mentors while participating in ongoing professional development and leadership training provided by the organization at no cost.
  • Evaluate School Needs: Investigate the health challenges faced by the schools you serve and measure your impact through needs assessments, reporting, and tracking your progress throughout your mentorship.
  • Oversee Wellness Clubs: Plan and execute the delivery of the Teens Make Health Happen program, dedicating 6-8+ hours each week throughout the semester. This commitment requires being present at assigned school sites for 3-4 hours weekly for instructional activities.
  • Promote Awareness: Organize monthly Caf O Yea demonstrations at each site and assist with regional events. Contribute to HealthCorps' social media platforms by sharing program highlights, impactful stories, and photos that showcase your students' achievements.
  • Embrace the HealthCorps Mission: Prioritize health and wellness in your daily activities and work to ensure that relevant local health resources are accessible to all students and staff at your sites. Your dedication to service will create a lasting, positive influence on your community.
  • Represent HealthCorps: Act as an embodiment of our organization and its values, both within your assigned sites and at broader events. Your presence will enhance outreach efforts that connect teens, staff, and community members to HealthCorps resources.
Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:
  • Current undergraduate or graduate student majoring in public health, public policy, biology, nutrition, marketing, psychology, education, social work, or related fields.
  • Maintain good academic standing with your institution.
  • Commit to 6-8+ hours each week for the entire semester.
  • A strong desire to grow personally and professionally as a community leader and speaker, comfortable presenting health-related topics to a teen audience.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to travel to assigned sites, potentially covering distances of up to 40 miles within the city.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds occasionally.
Benefits
What You Will Gain:

College Credit: HealthCorps will collaborate with you and your university to provide college credit for your mentorship, depending on your institution's specific requirements.

Professional Development: You will receive ongoing training, professional development, and mentorship throughout your mentorship experience, gaining direct exposure to public health and the education system while networking with community leaders.

Stipend: A stipend will be provided based on the number of sites you serve, intended to assist with any costs incurred during your participation in the program. This funding can be used for transportation, professional attire, meals, and other related expenses.
