All inspections and repairs must be documented to ensure compliance with safety standards and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a variety of company tools necessary for repair and inspection tasks based on classification level.
  • Execute authorized repairs on customer equipment in accordance with AAR specifications.
  • Lubricate railcars and clearly mark lubrication dates on the equipment.
  • Accurately document all repairs, either electronically or in writing.
  • Assist in preparing railcars, which may involve using backpack blowers, brooms, vacuums, and scraping tools to eliminate debris and non-hazardous contaminants.
  • Inspect and aid in the operation of railcar doors.
  • Assess the need for lubrication on railcars and securement devices, and assist with lubrication tasks as required.
  • Qualified personnel may be tasked with conducting and documenting preventive maintenance inspections and repairs for customers.
  • Operate various mechanical equipment, including small tractors, all-terrain vehicles, pickup trucks, and panel vans.
  • Ensure accountability and maintenance of all assigned equipment.
  • Perform housekeeping duties as directed by site management.
  • Be available for mandatory overtime when operational requirements necessitate.
  • Assist in the operation of hinge decks.
  • Inspect, repair, install, and remove bridge plates.
Required Knowledge and Experience:
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude.
  • Must possess a valid state driver's license if required to operate company equipment.
  • Preferred: Qualification under 15.1 American Welding Society (AWS) certification.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, including extreme temperatures, dust, and noise.
  • Occasional work in areas with limited lighting.
  • Ability to climb ladders to heights exceeding 16 feet.
  • Frequent lifting and carrying of up to 35 lbs.
  • Occasional work in spaces with less than 12 inches of vertical clearance.
  • Frequent bending and crouching for up to 1 minute at a time.
  • Constantly required to perform bending, twisting, and walking motions on uneven surfaces throughout the work shift.
  • Occasional need to apply opposing forces while maintaining pressure in awkward positions.
  • Ability to walk up to 3 miles in 5 hours while performing inspections.
  • Ability to sustain pressure in overhead positions for extended periods.
  • Must be able to hear verbal work or safety instructions.
  • Must be capable of working independently.
  • Must properly wear all required Personal Protective Equipment.
Environmental Conditions: Duties may be performed in indoor shops or outdoor environments, in proximity to moving locomotives, railcars, vehicles, and equipment. Frequent exposure to weather elements is expected. Appropriate PPE is required.

Challenges: Responsibilities must be carried out in a fast-paced railroad environment, requiring efficient process development and multitasking in time-sensitive situations. This position demands a professional demeanor in interactions with supervisors, employees, contractors, and customers.

Job Dimensions: Duties are performed under direct supervision, with general direction and limited discretion. This position does not involve supervising other employees.
