The role of the Academic and Faculty Mediator was created to foster an environment characterized by mutual respect, inclusivity, accountability, transparency, and integrity within Carnegie Mellon University. This position offers informal, unbiased, confidential, and independent support to both students and faculty in navigating or resolving challenges that impact their academic or professional experiences. The Mediator also serves as a confidential, neutral, and impartial venue for individuals to express concerns, explore options, engage in problem-solving, and promote accountability and equitable treatment. The Mediator may guide individuals toward suitable formal and/or informal avenues for addressing their concerns. The Office of the Academic and Faculty Mediator operates within a complex, decentralized, and multi-faceted organization that thrives on significant collaboration among administrative offices and academic departments. Consequently, the Mediator works in partnership with other offices and personnel whose roles involve legal or policy analysis or conflict resolution, consults with campus departments and academic units to address intricate issues through informal dialogue, and formulates cooperative strategies to avert future conflicts.

Key Responsibilities:

The Mediator undertakes various functions in fulfilling their duties and responsibilities, which include:

Conflict and Complaint Investigation and Resolution

  • Providing a respectful, secure, and supportive environment for individuals to discuss their issues, assisting them in clarifying their concerns, identifying their objectives, and considering a range of potential solutions;
  • Coaching individuals on effective written and verbal communication and general self-advocacy;
  • Clarifying relevant university policies, procedures, and practices;
  • Offering referrals to other offices and services as needed;
  • Investigating issues by collecting data and perspectives from various stakeholders;
  • Facilitating the resolution of interpersonal disputes;
  • Acting as an intermediary for parties hesitant to communicate directly;
  • Leading one-on-one and group discussions and other initiatives aligned with the mission of the Office of the Academic and Faculty Mediator.

Trend Analysis and Policy Development

  • Providing insights to university leadership regarding trends and patterns in complaints while maintaining confidentiality to prevent issues from escalating or recurring, and to identify systemic challenges;
  • Serving as a consultant for senior officials in the development of policies and procedures, raising potential discrepancies between institutional objectives and practices.

Management and Oversight

  • Supervising the Mediator Coordinator, who delivers mediation services to students and coordinates the activities of the Office of the Academic and Faculty Mediator.

Training, Education, and Outreach

  • Designing and conducting training and informational sessions for the campus community regarding the role of the Academic and Faculty Mediator Office and related topics that promote conflict resolution, equity, and a respectful campus climate;
  • Collaborating with staff and faculty within units who have informally acted in a mediation capacity.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field and/or equivalent experience and/or training;
  • Extensive knowledge of conflict dynamics and resolution techniques;
  • Proficient mediation and conflict resolution skills, with a strong ability to develop effective solutions;
  • Thorough understanding of professional standards and ethical codes applicable to ombuds practice, and their application within an academic context;
  • Comprehensive knowledge of relevant laws, regulations, policies, and research methodologies;
  • Strong management capabilities to guide, mentor, and develop staff;
  • Exceptional interpersonal communication skills to engage effectively with a diverse range of individuals within a complex organization, including active listening, discernment, empathy, and sensitivity;
  • Skills in research assessment, critical thinking, and problem-solving;
  • Advanced analytical skills to interpret statistical data and provide institutional feedback on trends and practices;
  • Expertise in training and educational methodologies;
  • Understanding of risk and liability issues, including principles of university governance and academic freedom;
  • Ability to identify issues and propose effective solutions, considering policy, legal, and practical implications;
  • Skill in recognizing systemic challenges and recommending improvements;
  • Capacity to collaborate and build positive relationships at all organizational levels to foster systemic change;
  • Proven ability to maintain effective working relationships across all levels of administration.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor, Master's Degree in Conflict Resolution, or an equivalent advanced degree in a related field;
  • A minimum of three years of experience as an organizational mediator, conflict resolution specialist, or in a similar role, or a combination of relevant education and experience.
