Position: Special Education Instructor
Department: Office of Student Services/Cambridge Rindge & Latin School
Cambridge is a dynamic and diverse city, recognized as a key player in the nation's innovation landscape. It is home to prestigious educational institutions and a thriving ecosystem of biotechnology, science, and information technology enterprises.
The Cambridge Public Schools serve approximately 7,000 students from JK-12, featuring award-winning educators, advanced technology, and innovative educational programs. Each school within the district is unique, yet they share a commitment to providing rigorous, engaging, and culturally responsive learning experiences, along with personalized support for every student. Notably, over 30% of CPS students communicate in a language other than English at home, with more than 70 languages represented among our families. Our schools celebrate this rich diversity.
The Office of Student Services (OSS) is dedicated to delivering a range of supports and services to students within Cambridge Public Schools (CPS). Our initiatives focus on ensuring equitable access and success for students with disabilities and those with advanced learning needs. The OSS encompasses special education, 504 services, and advanced learning programs.
The Role:
The Special Education Instructor is tasked with delivering tailored instruction to students with disabilities in both inclusive and specialized settings. This role requires collaboration with general education, special education, and related services personnel to ensure that students with disabilities achieve positive educational outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:

- Provide targeted instruction and support in literacy, mathematics, written expression, and social-emotional development.
- Monitor student progress towards IEP goals and objectives through various assessment methods and data collection tools.
- Develop Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) tailored to each student's unique needs and performance levels.
- Utilize systematic, structured, and multisensory approaches to facilitate student learning.
- Collaborate effectively with general education, special education, related services, and other staff members.
- Conduct formal and informal assessments and analyze data to guide decisions regarding IEP goals, instructional strategies, and support mechanisms.
- Adapt and modify instructional approaches to meet diverse learning needs and assist general education teachers in implementing appropriate accommodations.
- Perform any additional duties as assigned by the Assistant Superintendent, Special Education Director, or Coordinator of the Office of Student Services.
- Ensure the implementation of each student's Individualized Education Plan.
- Foster effective collaboration with families, community resources, related service providers, and general education teachers.
- Deliver high-quality instruction and support for students with disabilities.
- Other responsibilities as assigned.
Your Qualifications:
As the incoming Special Education Instructor, you will ideally possess many of the following attributes and qualifications:
- Comprehensive knowledge and experience with programs and services relevant to students' eligibility categories (e.g., autism, academic challenges, behavioral issues, learning disabilities).
- In-depth understanding of state eligibility criteria.
- Strong collaborative skills.

- Proven capacity to engage and support parents and families.
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills.
- Solid understanding of inclusive educational practices, including various co-teaching models.
- General familiarity with formal and informal assessments to track student progress.

- Massachusetts Certification for students with mild/moderate special needs is required.
- Experience in teaching or student teaching within an urban educational environment.
- Specialized training or certification in foundational reading programs such as Orton-Gillingham or Wilson Reading is preferred.
Cambridge Public Schools is committed to promoting a safe and healthy environment. Therefore, all new hires will be required to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 as a condition of employment. Requests for religious or medical exemptions must be submitted to the appropriate personnel.
