Department Mission Statement:

To facilitate the innovation of new suspension components while ensuring the profitability of Hendrickson. This will be achieved by concurrently advancing manufacturing methodologies and tools alongside product development. Position Purpose:

The Automation Controls Specialist is tasked with the design and development of tools, software, and methodologies to support both existing products and new product traceability initiatives. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Leveraging Rockwell FactoryTalk Suite

• HMI programming

• PLC programming

• Data collection and analysis

• Optimizing plant layouts and material flow

Essential Functions:

• Troubleshooting intricate issues regularly, investigating the root causes of specific problems, and providing comprehensive documentation to the Quality and Production teams.

• Collaborating with vendors to resolve software bugs or implement enhancements to their applications, configurations, or websites.

• Creating visually engaging charts, graphs, and HMI layouts.

• Ensuring thorough documentation in programs and work instructions.

• Serving as a technical resource for Hendrickson Manufacturing Engineers across the nation.

• Leading the engineering design process (concept, design, drawing creation, build, documentation), installation, and ongoing technical support of manufacturing processes, ensuring compliance with quality, capability, cost, and time objectives.

Develop and execute capital or expense projects, which include:
  • Researching both new and established manufacturing, data collection, and traceability technologies.
  • Planning the capital and time required for technology implementation.
  • Drafting Capital Expenditure Request (CER) proposals. Upon project approval, this engineer will be responsible for:
    • Acquiring the necessary equipment.
    • Installing it within the manufacturing facility.
    • Meeting budget and timeline targets.
  • Participating in product and process design reviews, aimed at enhancing product quality while reducing production costs.
  • Supporting standardization efforts by specifying and procuring similar controls equipment and components, and engaging in standards development.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned.
Education and Training

• A Bachelor's degree in a relevant technical field is required (Software Engineering or Control Engineering preferred).

Minimum Qualifications:

• 5-8+ years of engineering experience is required.

• Attention to detail is essential.

• Proficiency with the Rockwell FactoryTalk software suite (Studio 5000, Administration Console, Transaction Manager, View Studio, FT Directory, NGT2).

• Professional experience in Manufacturing Engineering within an automated machine tending environment is advantageous.

• Formal training in SQL or other database languages is preferred.

• Candidates must demonstrate the ability to interpret electrical schematics, flow charts, and Allen Bradley PLC code.

• Familiarity with data visualization techniques (charts, pivot tables, PowerBI) is preferred.

• Understanding of structured programming principles is required.

• Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills are essential.

• Production experience is a plus.

Physical Demands

• Frequent sitting and prolonged computer use.

• Ability to lead the physical assembly of mechanical/electrical machine designs, making modifications as necessary.

Environmental Conditions

• Office and shop floor environments

• The candidate will work in proximity to industrial machinery and may be exposed to various processes and environmental conditions associated with automation, machining, heat treatment, laser cutting, and other assembly processes.

• All necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) and associated training will be provided.

• Willingness to travel to manufacturing facilities as needed is required.

• Excellent problem-solving and deductive reasoning abilities.

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively within a team environment and across different functional groups.

• Strong organizational skills are necessary.

• Ability to respond swiftly to shop floor issues impacting production.
