Job Summary

Baptist Health is seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Spiritual Care Director to lead our Spiritual Care Department in providing exceptional pastoral care to patients, families, and staff. As a key member of our healthcare team, you will be responsible for ensuring that our department provides holistic, interdisciplinary care and manages faith community engagement.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide Spiritual Care: Offer oversight, guidance, and direct pastoral and spiritual care to patients, family members, associates, physicians, volunteers, and others according to the standards of the Association for Professional Chaplains.
  • Lead the Spiritual Care Team: Direct the activities of Chaplains and other Associates as assigned; monitor performance and clarify work expectations, clinical assignments, and assist with goal setting; promote cooperation among individuals and groups.
  • Develop and Implement Processes: Develop and implement processes through recruitment, orientation, training, education, and evaluation to ensure that the competence of all staff members is assessed, maintained, improved, and demonstrated throughout their employment.
  • Build Community Relationships: Plan and develop working relationships with local congregations.
Education Requirements

A Master's degree in Theology, Divinity, Spirituality, Pastoral Ministry, Biblical Studies, Religious Studies, Pastoral Care and Counseling is required; a Master of Divinity (M. Div.) is strongly preferred. A doctoral degree in a related field is preferred but not required.

Experience Requirements
  • Chaplaincy Experience: Five (5) years of experience as a full-time chaplain is required; healthcare chaplaincy experience is strongly preferred.
  • Leadership Experience: Five (5) years of leadership experience in pastoral ministries, such as pastor, associate pastor, youth pastor, counselor, or ministry leader, is preferred.
  • Leadership Experience: Five (5) years of leadership experience is preferred.
Certificates, Licenses, and Registration
  • Ecclesiastical Endorsement: Must have and maintain Ecclesiastical Endorsement.
  • Board Certified Chaplain: Prefer Board Certified Chaplain (BCC) from any accepted certifying organization (APC, NACC, ACPE, SCA, ACCC, NAVAC).
  • Ordained Clergy: Ordained clergy is preferred.

  • Verbal and Written Communication: Skilled in verbal and written communication.
  • Interpersonal Relationships: Ability to build and sustain interpersonal relationships.
  • Listening and Ministry: Ability to listen, understand, and minister to the specific spiritual needs of persons in crisis.
  • Knowledge of Congregational and Denominational Structures: Knowledge of congregational and denominational structures.
  • Community Health Resources: Knowledge of community health resources.
  • Religious Principles: Functional knowledge of the religious principles of major faiths.
  • Theological Reflection: Ability to reflect theologically on institutional concerns.
  • Organizational Strategies: Knowledge of organizational strategies and operational objectives.
  • Coaching and Counseling: Skilled in coaching, counseling, and developing others.
  • Management Principles: Knowledge of management principles, processes, and procedures.
