Inpatient Phlebotomy Specialist

The Phlebotomist Inpatient is responsible for obtaining and preparing specimens for analysis and performing various screening tests primarily in the acute care/inpatient setting. This role may require on-call shifts and the ability to work in a busy and stressful environment with limited supervision.
Key Responsibilities- Verifies test requisitions by comparing information with nursing station log and brings discrepancies to the attention of unit personnel.
- Verifies patient by reading patient identification and follows proper specimen labeling techniques.
- Obtains blood specimens by performing venipuncture, heel sticks, or other collection techniques including Peripheral line collections.
- Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures, and observing isolation procedures.
- Responds to codes and traumas as assigned and performs EKGs and transmits results.
- Maintains a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures and complying with legal regulations.
- Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician, pathologist, nursing station, or reference laboratory and referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification.
- High School Diploma or GED
- Urine Drug Screen Collection Certification (DOT) and Breath Alcohol Testing Certification (BAT) within 3 months post-probationary period
- American Heart Association BLS required within 6 months of hire
- Demonstrates competencies in obtaining specimen collections in acute care, during codes, and traumas
- Previous healthcare experience as a Phlebotomist, Medical Assistant, Patient Care Tech, EMT
- ASCP or equivalent Phlebotomy Certification
- Associate Degree in Science Related Field
- 6 months phlebotomy experience in an acute care setting
The role may involve working for extended periods, requiring sitting, walking, or standing for eight or more hours daily. The position may necessitate working beyond a standard 40-hour workweek, including weekends and after-hours shifts. On-call work may be required to respond to organizational and patient needs promptly.
This job requires the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, handle multiple tasks simultaneously, and maintain a professional demeanor at all times. The successful candidate will be able to work effectively in a team environment, communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members, and maintain confidentiality and discretion when handling sensitive information.
