Job Summary:

The Phlebotomist Inpatient will be responsible for obtaining and preparing blood specimens for analysis in the acute care setting. This role requires the ability to work independently with minimal supervision and to maintain a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Verifies test requisitions by comparing information with nursing station log and brings discrepancies to the attention of unit personnel.
  • Verifies patient by reading patient identification and follows proper specimen labeling techniques.
  • Obtains blood specimens by performing venipuncture, heel sticks, or other collection techniques including Peripheral line collections.
  • Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures, and observing isolation procedures.
  • Responds to codes and traumas as assigned and performs EKGs and transmits results.
  • Maintains a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures and complying with legal regulations.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Urine Drug Screen Collection Certification (DOT) and Breath Alcohol Testing Certification (BAT) within 3 months post probationary period
  • American Heart Association BLS required within 6 months of hire
  • Demonstrates competencies in obtaining specimen collections in acute care, during codes and traumas
  • Previous healthcare experience as a Phlebotomist, Medical Assistant, Patient Care Tech, EMT
  • Preferred: ASCP or equivalent Phlebotomy Certification, Associate Degree in Science Related Field, 6 months phlebotomy experience in an acute care setting

Working Conditions:

  • The role may involve working for extended periods, requiring sitting, walking, or standing for eight or more hours daily.
  • The position may necessitate working beyond a standard 40-hour workweek, including weekends and after-hours shifts.
  • On-call work may be required to respond to organizational and patient needs promptly.

Physical Requirements:

  • Lifting, pushing, and pulling: Support 50 pounds of weight (patient, assist with bedside needs, etc.), lift 50 pounds (pick up a child, transfer a patient, etc.), carry equipment/supplies.
  • Use upper body strength (CPR, physically restrain patient, etc.).

Exposures:

  • Job tasks may involve exposure to bloodborne pathogens, such as blood, bodily fluids, or tissues.
  • Radiation in settings where medical imaging procedures are performed.
  • Various chemicals and medications used in healthcare settings.
  • Infectious diseases due to contact with patients in areas that may have contagious illnesses.
  • Emotionally challenging situations, such as dealing with distressed patients or difficult family interactions.
